Barely room to slide a 24 inch box between the swimstep handles, so I put a huge aluminum, hinged flap on the exhaust side.
This is the most extreme cut-out you'd need and I still had very little seawater intrusion. I had to allow for the genset to slide this way for the 30 amp yoke to clear the restricted lid opening.
This allows variable opening. A larger hole had to be cut to get the 30 amp plug frame into the box. A simple i2000 would not need such a large cutout. West Marine sells a nice 7 inch SS cowl vent that would work if installed after the box is slid in place. I had no problem with salt water intrusion, had drain holes and a series of screened vents up against the transom down low for fuel vapor run-off.
This is where I plug in the boat's shorepower, twist-lock plug. The flap protects from rain.
There are three flap doors on the port side, one for 30 amp plug, one for switch and guage on 30 amp plug, and one for access to the normal Honda receptacles, switches and controls. The length of a 30 amp adaptor plug is almost the same as that of the fixed, 30 amp yoke which locks in the plug so I chose that. You can pull the genset and use that yoke to tie two i2000's together.
