As I lifted the upper half of the mast, the lower mast section lifted out of the ball and almost fell overboard (in this case to the concrete floor). The fix is an expansion pin that keeps the lower mast in place.

When not in use it stores under the gunnel.
May be overkill, but I backed the cabin top mount area with several tapered layers of glass and a piece of oak. I still have to clean this up and seal with resin.
I store the expansion pin, when not in use, in a 1/4" hole drilled into a Starboard plug glued into the top of the lower mast.

The mast now pivots on the Teflon plug, not metal to metal.
I didn't like how the lower, ball mount ground the lower tube against the deck plate, so I added a Teflon plug in the lower tube.
Easy mount. Through bolted to gunnel.

The boom makes easy work of lifting the dinghy on and off the roof. I can also swing items across the gunnel to and from the dinghy.
