I am getting closer to purchasing a 22 Cruiser and am trying to decide on electronics...an endless debate! I had originally thought of getting the Furuno 18x4, but is there space at the helm for a 10 inch display? I want the display to be directly in front of me...
Would the Raymarine C/E80 be a better fit? |

We have a Raymarine C80 on Constant Craving, and I am satisfied with it, but I would seriously consider going to a Furuno if I needed to replace the unit. One reason is the close proximity of the headquarters (Camas, WA) for repair/consulting.
When my GPS puck died (my fault due to over torquing the screws, breaking the plastic and allowing moisture intrusion), my local dealer, Rodgers' Marine Electronics was extremely helpful in the trouble shooting for no fee. I highly recommend that you consider buying through someone like Rodgers' rather than a West Marine or internet supplier.
Another thought... If you are going to get a radar arch, order the boat with the arch. I put mine on as an after thought, and although it is not in the least bit difficult, I found that I didn't like drilling holes in my boat. I get nervous twitch every time I do.

I have the Furuno 10" display on C-Dawg. The first thing I noticed after mounting it is it's BIG. It really looks huge sitting there. I'll try to snap a picture of it tonight and post it here.
What I really like about it, though, is that I can stand in the cockpit while fishing and very easily see the depth sounder display and the chartplotter. When I thought about getting the smaller 7" display I was worried that after splitting the screen things would be too small.
One caveat, I also have a Raymarine S1000 autopilot that is wired to receive GPS feed from the Furuno unit. However, I'm can't get the AP to see the signal. Still working on it. I add this in case you were contemplating an autopilot also. _________________ Rick & Shirley

Journey On is a C-25, which has more space in front of the helmsperson (socially correct,) but not much. In fact the magnetic compass and a cup of coffee use most of it. I installed a 7" JRC plotter display. Based on that experience, I have two suggestions.
1. Get the 7" display. Yes, it's nicer to have a bigger display (size matters,) but 95% of the time you'll be looking around it, watching where you're going. The 7" is perfectly adequate, and spend that $1000 on something else.
2. Mount it overhead. That way you can clearly look out the forward window (95% of the time) and yet the display is easy to see.

I have the Raymarine c-80 and feel that that size is perfect for the 22. I don't think I would like a larger screen there. The c-80 can have many customized screens so if I want to read the numbers from the cockpit I put up a screen like this:
Maybe Furuno can do similar stuff? _________________ -----------------
