New guy here, just joined, love this site.
I just purchased a 2005 25' cruiser w/ twin 2005 Honda 90's low hours.
But I wanted to upgrade to a new single motor. I found a scratch and dent new DF175 APXW5 that fits my budget.
Most people suggested the 200 HP, but came in a little over my budget.
Looking for anyone with some advise on the 175 HP performance figures for the 25" cruiser.
I will be using this boat and motor for a summer get away from the heat in Yuma, AZ. with plans to take off from Anacortes, WA to Ketchikan, AK and maybe beyond for a 1 - 4 month adventure.
I had the 22' angler many years ago and loved it. Can't wait to try out this new 25' now that I am retired and all the time to go exploring.
Thanks in advance, Dennis and my little Dog Iggy |

I'm not sure I remember anyone posting with a 175hp on the CD 25, but there are probably a few out there I have forgotten or those having yet to post. The majority of the folks on here seem to have the 150 hp outboard. With that said, I wouldn't expect substantially different fuel burn numbers than the 150 hp outboard as they have about the same swept areas and compressions ratios. The 175 at full tilt should have a max burn of around 18 gph. Why? It's just math as a 10 hp burns about 1 gph and a 100 hp burns about 10 gph. There are other variables, but that is the idea of the fuel usage or GPH for gasoline engines. I have found it to be surprisingly accurate on properly running engines.
So, I suspect at a 20 mph cruise based upon the data I have seen, mostly from what others have posted on this site, your 175 hp will probably use very close to 8-10 GPH giving you about 2 mpg or bit better. Of course, this depends on the actual load, trim settings, and the conditions you are experiencing at the time and isn't set into stone. |

Thanks for the reply.
your calculation of about 2mpg sound about right by the way you described it.
I was hoping for in the area of 3 mpg overall with cruise and slow meandering.
With wanting to do a lot of exploring and available fuel stops location so I can come up with a route plan.
I got a message that c-brats, Patrick that a Kim Christene has a 175 HP.
I will try to find him. |

I have a 200 hp Yamaha on our 25. The fuel flow runs from 2.2 to 2.7 on a good day with a ripple and no current. I have seen 3 when very light which is rare for me. Best cruse speed for us is about 25 mph at 4600 rpm’s with the 15 inch prop. With the additional HP over the 150 Honda it is able to get out of the water more. When added range is needed I take 4 cans that hold 5 gallons each. I generally run a very heavy boat with a kicker, freezer, down riggers fishing gear and provisions for 4 weeks or so. With all that said we generally run at hull speed.
Of course you can also run slower and get more range. The boat will top out at about 35 mph but you don’t want to look at the fuel burn then. I originally had a 200 2 stroke and could get over 42mph ….not recommend!
I personally think a 175 would do real well on a CD-25. _________________ Tom and Joyce Schulke

Dennis,
We just got the Suzuki 175 this spring and have been very happy with it.
It has the Suzuki SMG4 digital gauge that provides fuel burn, mpg, speed through the NMEA 2000 system. At cruise of 20 mph we average around 2.5 mpg with the engine running at 4200 rpm. Surprisingly, we can get 2.8 to 3.0 mpg if we cruise faster.
We decided on the 175 because it was less cost than a 200. Of course, I will never use all 175 because the boat goes too fast. I've had it up to 33 mph at 5400 rpm. I've not pushed to WOT, but the shop that installed reported 35 mph at 6100 WOT on fresh water.
We previously had the 2004 Honda 150, which was fine.
The Suzuki is state of the art four stroke and is so much more responsive, absolutely love it. _________________ Patrick and Kim Walker

I think for your situation, I would plan on 2 mpg for your extended trip knowing that will give you some reserve just in case. I'm surprised people are getting close to 3 mpg in certain situations, but I suppose with a light boat it's possible. When I run all over PWS, where there is little fuel available, I plan on 3 mpg with the CD 22, but generally get 4-5 mpg depending on load and actual conditions. It's reassuring to know you have a bit more range than you need. And I've needed it.....bad weather.....and also to view intriguing places I didn't plan on seeing. Here's a discussion on it from before: http://www.c-brats.com/viewtopic.php?t=7603 |

My 25 with the Yamaha F150 4-Stroke gets about 4.5mpg at 1600-1700 rpm at 5 kts (6mph). At 4500rpm and around 18 kts (20-21mph), heavy about 1.9mpg, and as I burn off weight, up to 2.1 mpg. Colby |

Installed bluetooth gateway on my new-to-me 07 Verado 150 (Supercharged EFI) - Almost all Mercurys made in the last 20 years can use this SmartCraft device that you can get next-day on Amazon for $220. No NMEA 2k, sensors, or MFD required.
Loaded for cruising but starting with a lighter 25 than how most are rigged.
RPM MPH MPG
2000 7.7 4.7
2500 8.4 2.8 (Probably not valid, no time spent at this RPM)
3000 10.4 2.8
3500 15.6 2.6
4000 17.3 2.6
4500 21.6 2.6
5000 23.1 1.9
(Boat will rev to near limit and go much faster but not on last trip)
I know these Verados have their issues, but good to see the fuel economy is not that different. |

Both run Great... the 25 is rated up to 200HP but I like a little headroom below max
Top speed is 39 mph
The following are readings from photos taken of chartplotter while underway
GPH MPH
8.3 26.7
7.8 26.7
7.0 22.8
2.0 8.6
1.1 7.3
1.3 7.3
0.7 5.1
1.1 6.0
one caviat... my hull is really smooth... wet sanded to 3K and orbital polished prior to Glidecoat Ceramic coating... sweet spot is 24 mph at around 3mpg
250 hrs on DF175 and New DF6 and no complaints so far |
