dog on dory , good to talk (argue ha -ha)with ya again if thats what u do for a living you should know better youll bite any bait wont u.but seriuosly amsoil works great and thoes litters kickers u guys use would benifit longer life for sure .but if we get technical well put everyone to sleep zzzzzz.lets keep it real world .oh yea don"t forget to include deffinitions for replys for us with 10th grade educations,would have broke ur chops on POLAR BEARS but don"t have much of clue on that one ........ see ya bud ////////john

Just a different opinion.

I prefer to service any engine myself. If a dealer does it and screws up (heaven forbid,) the warranty will not cover it anyway. I've done my own work for years, and never had a problem. I have screwed up and I have repaired it. Always a learning experience. And I learn for what to look.

Also, since engine manufactures don't refine oil, but only buy it from someone else, and mark it up accordingly, I prefer to know what I'm getting. The manufactures DO specify what oil to use, and I follow that spec. And by the way, West Marine isn't a refinery either. They don't spec but only sell. I leave their oil alone. Anyway I use Pennzoil or other reputable brands.

In addition, I don't have to haul the boat/car/truck in, wait and pick it up. I never could afford to have someone service the bikes.

About outboard gear oils.

Advise for consumers,(not engineers or racers LOL).

If the O/B manuf has their own brand of oil, you can use it without worry. If they have a higher priced synthetic of their own brand, its better and more expensive.

If the O/B manuf doesn't have their own brand of oil, use the grade specified in the owners manual. Again, a synthetic of the same grade is better and more expensive.

Gear oils packaged for O/B lower units have a water absorbing additive, which costs more than automotive gear oil, but absorbs water, should it get into the gear case.

If you change your own oil and strip or don't get the plug tight, it can cost you $$. If you learn to do the job correctly, it can save you money.

Used gear oil should not be mixed with used motor oil for disposal. Too much gear oil in motor oil or straight gear oil is toxic waste, and may not be accepted by an oil recycler.

Thats my opinion based on my experience. If you know more that I do, you don't need my opinion. LOL

To circle up on this, I found a dealer in Everett who will do the 20 hour service for $100/engine, which is way more reasonable than what I was expecting. I'll be taking the boat up there to get the work done. I may end up doing the subsequent services myself, but it will be nice to get this one done by the professionals.

$100 and engine now thats reasonable. I get and oil change on my Hemi Jeep for $28 at the dealer. Can't hardly do it myself that cheap. No reason the marine dealers should sometimes gouge you so hard.

I can't resist.

1. For those of you who worry about stripping threads, they make inserts to restore the threads, and some are stainless. Even I can put them in. That's the best way to learn how to NOT strip threads.

2. Racing oils have less additives than regular motor oils. They don't need anti-coagulants, water absorbers, viscosity stabilizers and all the crap they put in for maw driving around town.

3. Changing oil often and soon is a good practice. The smaller the engine the more oftener the change. Goes for transmissions, gearcases, etc. Buy a good oil and change it regularly. After every race, for example. I gave my brother a Honda generator. He never changed the oil, and then complained when it crapped out.
