On the Seattle Boat Show blog there is a fuel test comparing a 1988 Evinrude 115 vs a 2008 115 E-Tec. Their test boats were 22' Cruisers which are now on display at Qwest Field.

The test was a circumnavigation of Bainbridge Island on 7.9 gallons, guess which one didn't make it back to port Wink

Interesting article!

Here's the summary:

" Both boats had exactly the same amount of fuel (7.9 gallons). To no one's surprise the C-Dory with the 1988 motor was on fumes as the two boats went under the Agate Pass Bridge. A mile or so later, it ran out of gas just north of Port Madison while the other C-Dory with the 2008 engine carried on and made it all the way back to Elliott Bay Marina.




A comparison of the two engines:



The 2008 motor was 38% more fuel efficient than the 20-year old version


Based on Friday’s fuel prices at the dock, this equates to a savings of $16 per hour


The most startling difference between the two motors was when both were started – the 2008 hummed quietly as it warmed up, while the 1988 motor gargled and spewed smoke and fumes for several minutes."

I think that we all know that the new 4 strokes are more effecient than the older 2 stroke--and that the Evinrude E tec is probably as effecient as
the current 4 strokes. 38% is certainly a lot more effecient. I would have liked to seen a modern 4 stroke vs the E tec.

I have to assume that everything else in the boats was identical--weight, bottom prep, prop size and pitch etc.

No surprise the E-Tec won. But think about how contentious it would have been if it hadn't. Makes me chuckle just to think about the possibilities.

It would have been even better than a Powerboats report to have had a 90 Etec, 90 Honda, 90 Suzuki and 90 Yamaha do this test run...plus give press to the CD 22. This would definitely show the public "where the rubber meets the road" on efficiency.
