Has anyone had any experience with installing an in-line filter between the tank and the faucet? It seems like it would be an easy thing to do and one that should markedly reduce the off- plastic and chlorine -tastes we have discussed in the past. Some filters I've seen have a life of 1-5000 gallons, so one filter should last a long time even if used for general purposes and not strictly for drinking.
BTW, is the potable water hose 1/2" ID? I just crawled into the MOOSE to measure, but it was a little too dark to see.

We use the pitcher type of Brita water filters on the C Dories for our drinking water. No filtration for the water for showers, head, cooking etc.
Considering the relitatively small amount of water we drink, the pitcher filter seems to make more sense.
I have put in filters in my larger boats. In this case it was a charcoal/particulate filter at the galley sink--nothing in the heads. I also use a particulate filter before putting water in the boat or RV tanks. I do not use a carbon filter when filling the tanks, because it removes the chlorine. Also replace the filters every so often or nasty stuff will begin to grow in them.
There are a number of brands of filters--including the Pur, Brita, Calligan etc. I just buy the Sears holder and Sears cartreges. There are also some filters which will remove most bacteria. We prefer to filter for parasites and chlorinate for bacteria. _________________ Bob Austin

Al,
I don't have any experience with filters, so I will be interested to see what you find out.
I did some work on my boat this weekend and the water hose is 1/2" ID.

Al,
Have you put a pressure pump in your system? I don't think the foot pump in mine would work with a filter. _________________ Ken Trease

I had an inline filter in my 22 with a foot pump. It worked just fine. Truly improved the taste. _________________ C-Sick

C-Sick,
What type of filter did you use? I am surprised that the little rubber bulb would generate enough pressure to flow through a filter. I would be interested in plumbing one in my boat also. |

We have not filtered our drinking water in our years of use on
Halcyon. Once, when we detected a slight taste from the town water in the tank, we solved the problem in a cheap, delightful, and easy way -- put a bottle of Vodka in the tank! _________________ El and Bill (former live-aboards)

I am like Dr Bob - I drink very little water, maybe 8 ozs a day or less.
Have you ever seen what it does to your plumbing? And I believe my water is more pure than 99.9% of most community water systems or bottled water.

Hi all,
We have used the Britta Pitchers for many years. They work for us. We do not filter the city water we put in the boat tank. It seems the city water is treated and does not grow the black things.
I just wish we liked vodka, however our tastes run toward Red Cat wine from NY. We are not going to test it in the water tank.
