pulling prawn traps

Hi all

I'm wondering how im going to pull prawn and crab traps on our 22' c-dory
this is not a problem on my 16' welded aluminum but I don't like the idea of
pulling 300' of rope up the side of that white hull
I was thinking about a ss cap of some kind on the side of the boat
I don't think i need a trap puller just some way to protect the boat
any thoughts?

Not sure what kind of rod holders you use, but I have Scotty's, and they have a sheave on the end of a short extension that keeps the line off the side of the boat. Now if I just had a winch or teenager to do the pulling.

Folbe (the maker of the best rod holders IMHO) makes a nice rail mount pulley for pulling crab pots. You could check it out.

i hve been pulling by hand for two years,now I have a small electric puller made by ace line hauler and I love it, really worth it. pulling by hand has a big draw back that I did not believe at first but I do now. if you pull slow or god forbid,stop, the shrimp get out. lot more shrimp if you use a puller. pulling 400ft of line in a current is not fun in fact its dangerous.

How about a Trap-Ease, made by Scotty. They go for about $20 and drop down into a flush mount rod holder - either a Scotty or Fish-On.

I got a trap ease and it works OK but the line easily pops off the pulley. However, scratching the boat is the least of my worries. This past year I had to pots with 400' of line a 10# of weight each get pushed off into deep water and get tangled together in 4-8kt's of current. I pulled the tangled messed up by hand while drifting against and fast current. The concern wasn't the boat, it was a heart attack. I could only gain about 20-30' at a time and had to tie off to rest. By the time I got both pots back in the boat, I had enough. Last year I had two days with two limits each day, this year, 30 shrimp in one day and I didn't bother to put the pots back down. A pot puller may be in my future....

I would encourage anyone to look at the Ace Line Hauler. It is an economical solution to pulling pots electrically. I have mounts on both my boats for it and have been very happy that I installed it.
