I decided to do a bit of premptive maintenance on my Wallas this weekend. The combustion fan was making a bit of noise so after talking to Scan Marine I decided to replace it. The fan is only worth about $35 so its not that big of an expense. At the same time because the stove would be out I decided to clean the glow plug, the burner pot and replace the mat at the bottom of the burner. The job of replacing the fan is a bit technical but certainly doable for most people with some mechanical and electrical experience. The main board has to be removed to access the fan motor and the new motor electrical connections need to be soldered in. Other than that its just removing and replacing screws. The replacing of the combustion fan went smoothly. The less technical job of cleaning the burner and replacing the mat in the burner is proving to be more of a challenge for me. I have the pot removed but for the life of me I can't figure out how the burner pot comes apart to access the mat inside. Scan is closed so I can't call until monday to ask. Has anyone here cleaned the burner pot and/or replaced the burner mat? If so I'd sure appreciate any tips on how the burner pot comes apart.

Hi Ron,
I hope you get an answer. I was recently at Scan Marine and looked at the burner pot they have on a shelf. It just fell apart when I picked it up. Sure wish I could remember how it was held together.
They told me that they sand-blast the burner pots to clean them. How are you planning to clean your?
Good Luck,

Steve,
Thanks for the reply. I did get it figured out. There were a couple of metal clips along the side of the burner pot. They need to be pushed in slightly to allow the inner part of the pot to come out. I just wire brushed and lightly sanded with emory cloth the inside of the pot areas, the glow plug and heat sensor. The pot was not sooted up much at all. Put everything back together and its back in the boat running now.
New fan $35, new mat for pot $15, 1-2 hours to take apart and figure how every thing goes back $0, the feeling when it started and ran properly... priceless.
Also thanks to BC (I think) who suggested using a digital camera to take pictures as you take it apart. Its a great suggestion and helped me put it back together easily.

Hi Ron,
Glad to hear that it worked out well. Since I was just at Scan marine I can tell you that you saved yourself $125. That the price of their basic tune-up service to do what you just did.

Are the photos anything you could post as an aid to anyone else wanting to attempt this?

Al,
I actually only took one photo that is useful. It is of the stove turned upside down and it helped me figure out where the wiring connectors plugged in. I can post it but I doubt if it would help unless someone was needing it to reassemble theirs. I should have taken pictures as I went so that I could have been more helpful to the C-Brats. I'll be sure to do that next time. If anyone is thinking about trying a service don't hesitate to PM or post here. I'll try and be as much help as I can.
