I need some help from those who may have had their door latches go to pieces. Mine did this weekend. I contacted the factory and was told to go to the local Home Depot to get a storm door lock for it.

Well, I have spent about 3 hours on the internet looking for some type of latch lock mechanism that would be similar to the one I have. Nothing comes close to the dimensions of this one. I have also checked the marine suppliers and the only one that comes halfway close is Perko. I would still have to build a new door however.

Any help would be appreciated.

Denny

I would think that you can use the Perko and if necessary put an aluminum plate over the area to give good coverage on both sides. You might have to recess the plate. I am going on memory for my 1992--which probably had the same lock.

How about a good lock smith rebuilding the old lock? I agree that suggesting a screen door lock sounds a bit strange.

I think Bob's advice of having a locksmith rebuild what you already have is sound, But if that ends up to be too big of a headache think about this. Possibly the latch mech. from a 25 would work with some modifications. If not Perko probably has something that COULD BE MADE TO WORK. That is where I come in, I'm out here in Wasilla and have the machine shop right here at the house!!! I wouldn't want to get into a reinventing the wheel project but if all you need is some simple machine work to adapt a different style part to your existing plate, or a plate we built, Id be happy to help.

Denny-

What make and model lock do you have on your door?

My '87 CD-22 Cruiser has a perko lock/door knob/latch mechanism that is the same as the one produced today and in chandelries everwhere:

Perko Model 0927DPOCHR, $97.99 @ West Marine (WM #256958) HERE

You can probably buy parts for the lock mechanism directly from Perko.

Don't ever be afraid to call a manufacturer and talk to a service or technical representative about any of their products. That's what they are there for and you can save a bundle of time and money by getting some expert advice instead of fumbling around on your own! I learned this the hard way!

Or you can ask your C-Dory pals!

While we're talking about doors, locks, and such, here's a exerpt from a "Best Ideas for Under $20 discussion a while back:

I left $5 at the local home supply store today. I purchased a 1 1/8" utility cam lock and installed in the door just below the door holder open catch. It fits good and works good, I'll feel a little better about leaving things in the boat now. The factory lock just didn't instill much confidence

The utility cam lock idea is a good one.

I'm going to follow your lead, Ken, with the utility lock.

I'll also convert over the wood screws and self tapping screws that came with the boat on the hinges to through bolted machine screwswith double nuts that can't be removed from the outside.

Otherwise, the door lock, whatever it is, is a moot issue, as a simple Phillips screwdriver can remove one side of the hinges, and the door simply lifted out.

Thanks,

Joe.

DAMN, through bolt the door hinges, why didn't I think of that. My hinge hardware is constanly working loose that would be a good cure. I always kind of thought that crooks where to lazy to actually use tools to break in but it was a concern. I'm boltin for the door tomorrow.

Thanks!

The first thing I did was take it to a locksmith. He said that there was no way to remanufacture the brass part that broke into 4 pieces. Sorry I didn't mention it right off.

Every lock that I have been able to find is way too large or too small for the mortise that is in the door from the old lock. Nothing even close to those dimensions.

I am going to order a Perko lock and make a new door. The door is just a 21 1/4 X 51 1/8 peice of 3/4 in marine ply with a laminate on it to look like wood. I can use the existing window in it as well. I can paint it and it will look just fine.

By the way. Has anyone found a source for the laminate plywood that C-Dory used to use?

Denny.

Denny,

My laminate door got to looking pretty crappy so I painted it and the outside of the cabin bulkhead with Pettit EZ-Poxy paint in white. Matches the boat and is really durable. It is also easy to apply with a brush as it levels itself to look like it was sprayed.
Just an idea.

Jack

Thanks a bunch. This helps since I haven't researched the paint yet. Any idea where I can get it in Anchorage and can it be mixed for colors?

I bought it at Midnight Sun but they are out of business which is really too bad. A great store to go to.
I think West Marine on Diamond has it now but not sure. It comes in many different colors but the white matched te CD white almost exactly.
