Very soon now, I expect to be a C-Dory owner. My problem with the boat is one of seating. Under ordinary circumstances, there will be 2 maybe 3 folks on board, ( maybe 4 with dinette lowered). How to seat 2 kids outside in the back? Any ideas on how to install a bench-like contraption which is both inexpensive, easy to build and install and yet be safe and strong?

The solution offered by Lizzie Ann's crew is very classy. Another option is a couple folding camp chairs (which most of us use for cruising).
Best wishes,

I know several C-Brats have installed "jump seats" in the cockpit. Below is a picture of the jump seats installed on "Moose".
Playin Hooky installed a jump seat at the transom.
Just a couple of nice ideas from some handy C-Brats.

I ordered my boat with a bench seat on the stern. It will fold down if you want more room in the cockpit. It holds three adults or four kids. |

Don't overlook the obvious, a big cooler with a pad attached to the top.
You can get a 125 quart cooler for $60-$150 that will take a cushion that snaps on, or add one of your own device.
Kids under 10 or so might not even care if there was a pad on it or not!
Plus, the cooler is very useful itself.
Kid is bad = confine him/her to the "Brig" after doing an emergency drill to make room by consuming all the beer!

We used two large coolers. We also stowed two straight back folding chains, which we used on the beach and in the cockpit.--as well as a couple of the usual fabric and alunimum tubing sling type chains. _________________ Bob Austin

Someone last year suggested the use of a couple of Maccabee chairs, saying they fit well on both the curved and flat surfaces in the cockpit and even the aisle in the cabin.
They also pointed out that they stored well in the space under the dinette table out towards the hull.
I have one of these in my larger boat, and it's something everyoone ought to treat themself to sooner or later, but they're big, heavy, expensive, and take up a lot of space.

Hello Lucky Day,
On Happy Ours, we currently use 2 aluminum chairs from West Marine: We chose the Premium Deck & Beach Chairs because they are lightweight, comfortable and fold very nicely.
For storage, we fold both chairs upright in the cockpit and have a bungee cord connected to 2 small stainless hooks on the starboard side.
Direct text from the West Marine on-line catalog:
You'll love relaxing on deck or on the beach in this extra rugged version of our popular aluminum deck chairs. Easy to stow and transport plus great convenience features, this deluxe chair will quickly become your favorite. Comfortable, extra wide seat and back features 1/2" thick foam padding covered by high-strength waterproof acrylic fabric. Broad armrests sport a drink/mug holder and are held up by the sturdy chair frame that's made of extra thick 1 1/8" anodized aluminum. A handy clip locks your chair in the folded position for easy transport and a mesh magazine pocket stows your reading material out of the way. 21" wide seat and back.
Stowed dimensions: 36" x 30 1/4" x 4 3/4"
Available in White or Pacific Blue
I tried to download a pic and but struck out. Nice pictures of the chairs are available on the West Marine website.
We plan on building/installing a custom transom seat similar to Lizee Anne in the future, however, we will still retain our chairs. Will most likely use King Starboard material, stainless hinges and folding stainless legs from Garelik. Cushion will be Sunbrella.
Hope this helps!
Safe Boating!

Lots of good information. I haven't been able to find a shop that has the Maccabee chairs - except Linens & Things (their version is a college-logo series). Does anyone have experience with TravelChair? http://www.travelchair.com/ |

Try this LINK for MacCabee chairs.
There's also available all over the place, such as at WallMart, Target, etc.
