|
|
Honda is conducting a safety recall of the shift arm installed on certain Honda BF135A and BF150A motors.
My Honda dealer believes that this applies to the 2006 150hp motor that was destroyed in the November accident but not to the 2007 replacement he installed, but he is checking serial numbers.
Honda defines the problem as "due to a manufacturing defect, over time, the shift arm may break, preventing you from shifting the outboard into or out of gear". They also state that they "strongly recommend that you stop using your outboard motor until the shift arm has been replaced."
I received my letter from Honda today. I'm posting it because Honda's recommendation strikes me as exceptionally strong. Honda is paying for the part and the labor but not transportation to the dealer nor related hauling expenses.

Does the letter give any more information about which motors are the "certain" motors in question? _________________

I won't get too worked up till I get the dreaded letter but that would be about right. Wait all winter to get this thing wet and Bingo off to the dealer for an undetermined amount of time!! I wonder if this is something us underlings would be trusted to change. Might just toss the letter like I do the ones from Chevy. Still get 200K out of the trucks even after tossing the "Letter".

I included all substantive info cited in Honda's letter. That was it. It was my Honda dealer that speculated my old motor might have been the reason for my receiving the recall notice rather than the replacement motor.
Sorry, thats all I've got.

Guys, Here's the list of affected serial #s from Honda's web site.
BARJ-1000001-1200961
BASJ-1000001-1200090
BANJ-1000001-1202105
BAPJ-1000001-1200322
Of course my Right and Left rotating engines fall into the affected model category (BAPJ and BANJ).
Now to find a competent shop that can do the repair without causing 2-3 new problems _________________ Roger

Thanks for the serial numbers. They confirm that my 2006 motor BANJ-1201... would have been recalled. My replacement motor, BANJ-13..... is not in the recall range.

Yep. According to those serial numbers, our motor is towards the end of the recall... also towards the end of factory/dealer support. Knowing that most boat service places put work aside until they "get around to it" (how many of us have experienced that?), imagine what a pain this is for those of us who travel extensively. I feel your orphanly pain, brother. _________________ Jim & Joan

I realize I'm not affected but even if I were, I don't know how seriously I would worry about which Honda dealer I returned to for service.
When I needed to have the damaged motor replaced, the selling C-Dory/Honda dealer (who was not that convenient) preferred I went elsewhere so I did. I would be really miffed if ANY convenient Honda dealer would not provide the necessary replacement and I'd complain exceedingly vigorously at the corporate level.
I suspect what Honda is hoping to do is have dealers order the replacement parts in numbers corresponding to the number of engines they have sold. That way they don't have to manufacture many "extras".

I just spoke with Lee our service manager and he says it it not a big job to replace the shift unit . Honda pays .6 hour flat rate to the dealer which tells me that its not a big job . Its a pretty sad state of affairs when a honda dealer tells you to " take it back where you got it ". Honda has the dealer friendliest warranty program out there . Jimmy, Ill try to find someone through Honda that will service you . That way you can be all fixed up long before the Gulf Coast Gathering.....................

I'll go one further and tell you if you can't get the warranty update done at any authorized Honda Marine Engine dealer I'd put a call into the marnine division of American Honda Motor Company immediately. It's a serous breach of the Dealer Agreement with Honda to 1) refuse warranty work and 2) not get the work done in a timely manner. It makes no difference whatsoever where the engine came from in the U.S.; if it's warranty work any dealer must accept it. Don't back off...they're snowballing you (that's the polite version). _________________ Les
