If a boat was posted over a month ago and it has sold, then what is it still doing in the "Boats for Sale" area? Make it easier for the former owner to delist it. Maybe create another area "Boats recently SOLD".

"BOATS for SALE" shold only list unsold or pending sale boats. Let's keep this area current and up to date (or I will end up buying my first C-dory elsewhere).

wealthywine-

I can see your point as a boat buyer wanting to have only currently available boats in the listing.

The boat ads are moved to the archives for reference by Bill or Mike as soon as a seller notifies us that the boat is sold, but it is up to the seller to make this notification, and unrealistic to expect our site monitors to contact each boat lister continually to see if the boat is still available.

I suppose they could make a rule that an ad expires after a certain period, but this approach would have it's akward communication aspects, too.

Good Luck with your C-Dory search!

Joe.

I'll surely take your good suggestion up at our next board meeting. Right now our site admistrator is counting his 10% commission from boat sales and is busy. Wink Rolling Eyes

As a moderator (the oldest on the internet, I suspect) I don't have a clue when a member sells a boat unless he says so, and many of them do notify the site. He can certainly delete his sales notice...

Mike, our assistant coach, will have a comment or two I'm sure.

Go Hawks,

Dusty

(You must live on this site as I see your posts all over the place! Very Happy )

It's just that I see replies posted by the seller indicating that the boat has been sold and I see other replies from other seller's indicating that the boat has been sold and they do not know how to delist. Seems to be a common problem and a web page design issue.

I went to my first boat show this weekend - Annapolis - just to see the C-Dory for the first time. They had a 22 and a 25 at the show. I made the mistake of boarding the 25 after being on the 22. (My heart says 25 but my wallet says used 22)

Wealthy,

If this were a commercial or governmental Web site we would expect listings to be kept up to date - pronto. As a laid-back place where people with similar interests can communicate and share, run by people who have day jobs and families and other interests, I think a different set of criteria apply.

Just a thought,

Interestingly enough, anyone can edit their own posts. Some folks lose interest when their boat is sold... and don't take the time to let folks know.

The good guys here who provide this forum aren't charging to list boats for sale - their interest is altruistic. If you buy a C-Dory from someone other than on the list here... well, you will still have a very cool boat. And their tax status will not change one bit. Wink

Perhaps you can help out by letting the forum know which boats you checked out and are now sold? Think of the good you will be doing for all C-Bratdom. Thumbs Up

Good luck on your boat search. Last year when I first began looking for one of these cool boats, it seems that most of them listed in the "Boats for Sale" sold before I could finish reading the ad!!

Best wishes,
Jim B.

As a person who has listed and sold boats on other, even commercial, sites, I have to relate that failing to 'unlist' a boat after it's sale is rampant in the field. I am still getting calls about a houseboat I sold over two years ago. And, yes, I did notify the commercial internet site of the sale many times.

This site is just a bunch of nice, amateurs, when it comes to selling things...

wealthywine, and others-

Bill will have to explain it fully, but the ad thread is different regarding delections, and perhaps editing.

This is to keep sellers from changing the ad in a dishonest way, and to prevent the ad from disappearing before we can archive it. The archives are very useful for comparative price study,

It does not prevent the poster from posting again on the thread, saying that the boat has been sold.

Joe.

Da Nag! Bill! Down boy!! Let it go! Better yet tidy things up. I would do it but I am fixing dinner for my kids.

And remember, if someone elects to have their fees refunded, we always do it cheerfully.

Wealthywine, As a fellow wanna be C-Dorian, I can understand your frustration w/ the listings. I wade through them almost daily hoping that THE BOAT will appear. Additionally, I do not know how long you lurked (not a bad thing) around this site before you joined just one month ago. It would be interesting to know. However, it appears by the tone of the post that started this thread that you do not have a firm grasp with this site and the people who run it. This site and the people who run it are dedicated to the furthering the C-Dory sport. They do a very fine job of it and all for no charge. You will not find another site including the factory's that explains more about the nuances (good and bad) of these fine boats. This site has not always listed the boats that are available (at least not so promenently on the front page). While postings are sometimes not meticulously maintained, I for one am glad to have it as a reference and am thankful for the folks who run and all of those who participate in the site.

When I first read it I thought that your point was valid. I still do. However, I found the tone to be a bit objectionable. Thanks for your contribution and I look forward to seeing more posts in the future.

Mike – I think some people just do not understand the inter-workings of this site. Your primary purpose for this site is to make a BIG profit and once you have the money for the posting of the boat for sale, it takes some time to count all your money. Once that is done you will get to the less important things like updating the link.
Now I would be willing to offer my services to you guys and help with managing the boat for sale post for a fee but I am not sure you are making enough money on them to afford my services. I would be willing to do it for say 110% of your profit plus some real money.

Yeah, well. I guess I got a little snippy there. Sorry. But the fact is, that is the only one of the many forums on here for which we strive to maintain a sense of order and accuracy. Just now, I went through the whole thing and found one ad where the poster had indicated in a followup message that the boat had sold. One. It had been languishing since Sept. 30. Last night I moved two others to the Reference forum because someone was kind enough to point out that they were closed by posting a message to refresh the thread (which is the second most ideal way to call this to the Mods' attention, the best being a PM). Surely, there are a few other listing for boats that are no longer for sale, but until someone posts that the boat is off the market, I cannot in good conscience delete or otherwise remove the ad. Neither am I going to seek to contact the poster and ask the status. It is far easier for me to just scrap the whole ad service. True to the nature that brings this forum such dramatic success, I would personally rather have many people upset to whatever degree of worth they place upon such things than have one person distressed by his ad being yanked prematurely.

Now then - to lighten this up a little, here is a task that is tailor-made for Joe. Scan for us, please, the entire World Wide Web, including all the Internets (Democrat joke Xmas Naughty), and see what percentage of the used C-Dorys for sale in the world are represented here.

You're just trying to slow me down with a diversionary tactic to impede my progress of obtaining my primary goal of catching up and passing Pat/TAP.

Won't work, but thanks for the chance to score anoither post!

Joe.

If there's no delete feature to adds like most other sites then just state that.

What we don't need here is smart-ass, half-witted comments about the economics of running this site. We all know that the moderator is doing it out of love for the boat.

Suggestions and questions should be encouraged and this was a fair question. I was feel the same frustration before I purchase my CD so I completely empathize with this poster.
