I arrived back yesterday to the Bridge Bay Marina on Yellowstone Lake with the HunkyDory for the 23rd year, after earlier this year attending the Friday Harbor Gathering & a cruise again to Princess Louisa Inlet & later a 7000 mile Truck-camper road trip to Alaska & the Yukon.

Most of the Marina has been closed this season for electrical updates & replacements with only E dock open until a couple days ago. There are presently two other C-Dorys here, Jody on the Voyager & Kevin & Laura on the Grace. It would be great to have some more show up.

Jay

Honky Dory was my favorite Glen-L Design.

I used to pass that lake when on sales trips but only once stopped to look at it. Also Bear Lake and Palisades. Have you been to them all in that area. Flathead, Preist, and Coeur d' Alene? that three corner of states is magnificent. Now I'm retired and mis those areas.

I saw Grace bobbing merrily in her slip on my recent trip to Yellowstone. I was, and continue to be, amazed at how quiet the marina/lake is, particularly in comparison to the land-based park!

It is high on my list to bring my new boat to Yellowstone Lake -- hopefully next year will be the year.

Bear Lake is only about 15 miles by air from our home in Cokeville, Wyoming & yes I’ve been on it many times along with some of the other lakes & more you didn’t mention to name a few such as Teton, Fremont, Willow, Boulder, Half moon, Flaming Gorge & Powell. I’ve traveled through all the lower 48 states, but much prefer the mountains & coast states of the west.

Hunkydory has always been a favorite saying of mine, so when 23 years ago we were finally able to purchase a C-Dory, that name seemed just right.

I’ve been visiting Yellowstone National Park now for 54 years & thats almost yearly since 1971 & have observed drastic changes through out the park mostly for the worse with Yellowstone Lake & the Bridge Bay Marina remaining an oasis. It has actually become quieter here with less activity, especially in the evenings, while the rest of the park has declined in wildlife viewing & human visitors have grown with many of the roads traffic jammed. The last few years, I’ve almost stopped driving the loops through the park & spend more time at the Marina or on & around the lake with an occasionally drive through Hayden Valley to the Canyon area & back.

What Jay has observed at Yellowstone, is true for most of the Mountain West (both Rockies and Sierra). I am more familiar with the Sierra, which I first visited in 1941 to Lake Mary and June Lake, near Mammoth Mountain. The same is true with Tuolumne Meadows above Yosemite, and the Valley itself.

I mentioned the lakes I passed on my way to garden centers and Mormon Temples all over the mountain states, up until I retired in December, selling Dutch bulbs. The sierras are my favorites but there are too many people. I hope to see those lakes again.

I first fished Yellowstone Lake with my father in 1964 as a 7-year-old, and returned several times, including with my young son and daughter, nearly always readily catching cutthroat trout either trolling spinners with spinning rods or streamers with a fly rod from a motorized canoe (sometimes a float tube), always camping in Grant Village. A few times renting boats at the marina. It could be rough, but was great fun! As lake trout moved into West Thumb and the larger lake from Lewis Lake the cutthroat seemed to disappear. I haven't fished the lake for maybe 15 years and it was disappointing the last few times. I wonder if that is still true or if the excellent fishing that used to be there has returned in some part. If so, I'll be there with my CD22 soon. I generally focus my boating on fishing, and the CD22 seems like a great boat for Yellowstone Lake.

My gosh some of you folks are old, lol. 1964? 1941? Are you all sure you weren't born 20 or 30 yrs old or more? Where was I that it never occurred to go to these places?
My Gosh. They are beautiful.

You're only as old as you act...case in point, the 70+yo "Robert" that just set a new single-person record for the Great Loop in a 16-ft tiller-steered jonboat! What a trip he detailed, with his waypoints detailing some conditions including his speed at that instant and where he stopped. He seems to have lucked out with weather as he went coastal after NC and bypassed much of the IC waterway, Chesapeake (my youthful playground) and Delaware Bays to enter the Hudson River. With his waypoints recorded, you can use Windy and other software to see the coastal conditions he weathered in that little boat. It could have been worse. I've been fishing including the Baltimore Canyon and near Gulf Stream. It can get rough and one time had to wait out a named storm before coming back in. IMO (but my opinion only) he was reckless at times with other people's property and possibly lives while IN the intercoastal moving at high speed and wake and motoring all day long. Maybe caffeine worked for him, but normally trying to maintain a legal watch and control 14+ hours would be difficult (again, my opinion only not shared by many others). There is lots more discussion of it on The Hull Truth if folks are interested. My own personal love is hiking and canoeing/kayaking, but the luxury of a 22 ft C-Dory and a motor propelling me is attractive as I approach 70, my hiking and paddling pace decrease, and I find it uncomfortable to sleep on the ground.

robhwa,
I live along the Delaware at Easton PA and have often enjoyed canoeing it. But once I anchored along the barrier islands of Barnegat I could no longer forget the bigger bodies of water and the peacefulness they provide. I was a farm kid with little exposure to the outside world and it wasn't until I was 20, and won the ISA tree climbing jamboree for PA/DE that I had the chance to travel a little. I climbed in the coastal redwoods in Eureka for a year and learned to love the west coast and so on.
As to the Record Breaker Dude that you mentioned...to each his own. But in order for him to break the records he had to break many laws and also rules of courtesy. He had to abandon completely the laws set forth by many private and government agencies. There may be so much more to this that I don't know so I'll calm down and move on. But I was not a fan from what I heard of it.
I have done the portion of the loop from St Michaels MD to Fall River MA. I'm hoping to do the Hudson through Lake Champlain this fall but it is tentative at this point.
Comically I add to your truthful comment about being only as old as you act. I'm certainly old enough to attempt being a law abiding and safe boater, and I even fail for trying, but to each his own. I'm only 66.
I wish you the time of your life on Yellowstone.

Canoeing and kayaking the Delaware was always a favorite...particularly Skinner's Falls in a kayak, usually several times each trip. Two years ago, I ended an Appalachian Trail hike of MD and PA at the Delaware Water Gap, a favorite hiking area, and stunningly beautiful. What a special area you live in. How exactly is a tree climbing competition done? I've climbed trees for research from Spruce in the TN and NC Smokies (ouch) to Douglas-fir, Bigleaf Maples and Sitka Spruce (again ouch) in WA and OR. Ropes, ascenders, prussiks, and sometimes spikes. I used to do a lot of vertical caving before whitenose in bats stopped that. At nearly 70 I can't really do these, except for the hiking. In fact, "Nimbleweed Nomad" (trail name) thruhiked the AT at age 83 a few years ago. I am looking forward to using that internal combustion engine to move me more and more as my own body fails over time, and I really appreciate the C-Brats site for ideas and experiences that I can follow. There is lots an older person can do that is still adventure. That said, I try to be meticulously careful with what I do when the safety of other people may be affected. Lack of that would be a valid criticism for trying to set a speed record with a motor boat that can easily kill. I've been the recipient of far too many bow waves when in a canoe, and even got hit once, though lightly. We just had an unsupervised 5-year-old that went out on a paddleboard die nearby. What exactly were his parents thinking?

I was a member of ISA in 1980 and won the state level climbing competition. From there I went on to compete in the national event which was held in the beautiful Balboa Park in San Diego. I took 5th I believe. That was my first time out of PA by airplane. It was before the era of ascenders and fancy gear and in fact my main rope then was still 1/2" manilla, though that would change that very year to Samson. I was very natural to climbing but after 25 year at a desk the vigor is gone. But after all it left me with the ability to tie BowLine Knots with my eyes closed and so that can't all be bad. Additionally, both of my boys, now in their 40's are equally confident with knot tying.
Times change....Now I boat and so does my dog and some of my children. I don't hike, never liked it, wish I would've.
