My old 22 Angler sandwiched between Water Buoy (a newer 22 Cruiser) and Kismet (formerly Great Republic, the redone 26)
1982 22' Classic Repower .... looking for feedback.
Coles notes: is 500 lbs too much to hang off of the transom, either as a 90 or 115 and 9.9 combo? Am I going to notice the extra 50 lbs (Tohatsu) or 30 lbs (Suzuki) in a big way?
I live on a Yukon lake that's 100 km long and very isolated. The fishing grounds are right off of my dock, but I do go down the lake with relative frequency. I cruise in chop at 15 to 18 knots, but when the lake treats me to glass then my current top end is 25 knots.
One or two trips to Skagway/Haines/Hoonah/Juneau per year.

Currently my boat has a 2006 90 HP Etec (325 lbs) and a 1998 Honda 15 (108 lbs). 433 lbs total. Of note, the batteries are forward of the helm and the fuel tanks are mounted under the gunwhales, 65 liters each in capacity, and they begin ~12 inches rearward of the cabin and end ~24 inches shy of the stern. The boat is incredibly well balanced as is.
I prefer to have matching brands for main and kicker if possible. I also want EFI and electric start for the kicker (and possibly power tilt). The EFI requirement means that the kicker will be either a Tohatsu/Merc or a Suzuki.
There is a decent deal to be had on a new 90 HP or 115 HP Tohatsu main. Same block for each - 392 lbs. The 90 is $1 000 less than the 115. The new 9.8 Tohatsu EFI kicker is 93 lbs (less power tilt). 485 lbs total. +52 lbs on my current setup.
The Suzuki 90 comes in at 344 lbs. Their 9.9 kicker with power tilt is 123 lbs. 467 lbs total. + 34 lbs on my current setup. Cost will be about $5 000 more to go Suzuki for the pair over Tohatsu. |

I doubt you'll notice much difference considering how close those weights are. But a lighter and smaller kicker could offset some of that weight. A 9.9 is not going to move it any faster than hull speed. |

Fifty pounds equals 8 gallons of gas. Do you presently notice a difference in performance and handling after you burn 8 gallons? Fifty pounds isn't much of a difference. Get the motor you want. Just my 2 cents.
Edit: Fill a couple of sandbags with fifty pounds and throw them in the motor well and see if you notice a difference. |
