falco as far a manuals downriggers go penn are the best made. I just loved the clutch systems on them. and a vertical reel can not be beat for a manual down rigger.

falco & Tom

I really agree with your assessment of the Pen manuals. They are the KISS Principle exemplified. Joe.

Hello Hammerhead

I have a pair of Scotty 1116 pro pack downriggers on my boat. They are mounted on the sides allmost two feet back from the stern.I have never had a problem with them in two years besides a blown fuse when cable got wrapped around boom in rough seas.Once you use electric downriggers you will never go back to manuals or lead weights.Nothing wrong with manuals at all they work well .I usually have two or three newbies on board on fishing trips and I usually play captain and deck hand for four rods and the electric down riggers makes my life so much easier .Downriggers are also so nice for using light tackle. No more $2.50 lead weights to lose every time you get a strike.$20.00+ a day in lead adds up quickly toward purchase of downriggers.
I also have a Ace Line Hauler crab trap puller that mounts to Scotty downrigger base and plugs into the same outlet downriggers do.Makes it so convienant,no more wiring to run or holes to drill.
Hammerhead give me a call if you want to look at my downriggers on my boat.I am in Sac area also.It is not a C-Dory but you can get ideas on how they work and how they mount.
