WRT sights and sounds to hit on the Columbia, Rex Ziak, local historian and Lewis and Clark expert, has a fold-out route book detailing areas L and C visited, annotated with quotes, and so forth, all the way up the Columbia-Snake system. This is brand new. I've seen a copy, but have not yet bought one. It's a winner, for history buffs intending a cruise up the Columbia:
