I think this may be the boat that the lady recently passed away in so it may be troubling to some to view. But there is a damaged C dory cruiser coming up to auction on copart. Didnt list in the for sale page since its not currently available and you may need a license to buy it in AK.

I won't speculate, but is the one that sank near Sitka with loss of life? |

If the boat capsized, then most likely the engines are only good for spare parts, the wiring should all be replaced. There have been boats damaged far worse than this one, which are back on the water. The challenge of making a new top is not all that hard (especially if you don't make the top bulge. (Increase the crown to get headroom. _________________ Bob Austin

You could ask the factory for a new top. It would be some $$, but probably easier than making one from scratch.
If you can pick this boat up for a couple of grand and have the time and wherewithal to rebuild it, you could end up with a nice boat for less than the usual prices. It wouldn't be that hard. Just have to be careful of any water intrusion issues. |

It would be interesting to see if the factory will make a new top. If they will, it certainly would make the reconstruction easier.
It is possible that there are some hidden damages which we cannot see in the photos. |

It appears from what I've seen from my boat and pictures of boats in the factory, that the top is a separate piece (and why it came off so cleanly on the damaged boat). I believe that it is just attached with some adhesive.
I don't see why the factory would not sell you just the top. Won't be cheap though. Shipping it will be a pain. |

There have been instances in the past where the factory (at certainly places in time) have declined to make "replacement parts".
You are correct that the top is a separate piece. It is tabbed in, as well as having caulking compound. When my new Tom Cat arrived, they had neglected to put the caulking compound in place!! Fortunately the top was well tabbed in place with fiberglass tape.
Transportation would definitely be an issue--but it would easily come by barge to AK--cost of fab, plus transport might be prohibitive for a salvage boat?? The hurricane damaged boat in the Carolinas which sold a couple of years ago (photos of the boat after damage in my photo album) had a top fabricated and the side walls of the cabin (plus front and rear walls were increased in height) to give it a "finished look". I suspect it would be easier to make at top with more crown, than to extend and get correct the geometry of the increased for and aft walls. If an increased crown top were made, it could either be tapered forward or a filler made for the front and back.[/img] |
