Wife and I plan to have C-Traveler on San Diego Bay, or in the area, for a week in August. Does anyone have some recommendations or information for any transient slips there? Would prefer availability of a launch ramp and rig parking for that week as well. We would be staying on the boat at night so that would have to be allowed as well. TIA. Colby

Thanks Alain. I was aware of that, I think from a previous recommendation from you. I'm just wondering if anyone has a specific recommendation or experience with any of the area marinas. I did email someone earlier, I think there, to ask about long term parking, and didn't get much of a response. Colby

Colby, quite a few years ago I had a to do some inspections down at Point Loma Naval Station. We stayed at a hotel out on Shelter Island. It was a really nice place to stay with the marinas on the inside of the island. I would think that if you contacted the hotel there they may be able to help you with parking. The map provided by Alain is very helpful. You may try contacting the harbor police at the end of the island. As I recall there was a lot of parking out there and I remember a motor home or two spending the night in the parking lot out front. I haven't done it but you may want to take a look via google earth. Good luck.

This is the lack of info I'm putting up with:

You can not leave your boat trailer at any of the San Diego boat launch sites overnight. Check with local marinas or storage businesses.
Port of San Diego Maritime Department

And:

Looks like the registration card you provided expired. Can you provide a valid copy? If not, do you have proof of payment of registration in process?
Kind regards,
Port of San Diego Maritime Department

That was in reply to my msg:
Please find attached a copy of both my driver's license, and my boat registration, as requested. (Registration expires this March, but will be renewed.) I will need to store my trailer for the week I reserve the slip, and will need to be able to access my pickup for local transportation. Can you please provide me with any information in regards to that. Thank you. Colby

The problem being, all Wisconsin boat registrations expire on March 31st of the expiration year, so they only show the expiration year on the registration card.

I just called them, and pretty much the same non-answers. "There are lots of marinas around, you can check with them to see if they have vehicle and trailer storage..."

So back to where I started. Anyone know of any specific marinas that have a launch ramp and parking space for disconnected trailers and trucks? BTW, this is the port at Shelter Island.

Colby

This may not be where you want to be, but it should work: Chula Vista Marina. This is up at the head (toward Mexico) of the San Diego Bay system. We have friends (sort of relatives) who keep their boat at Chula Vista--and many who have launched there in the past. It is gated, they have a launch ramp, It may be the only one in S D Bay Area, who may allow you to detach the trailer from the truck....that is going to be a problem at Shelter Island/Bay, and Harbor Island. There are a lot of small marinas, but most don't have launch ramps.

You want a locked parking lot in this area. It has been a long time since we have been in S D Bay, but most of my information is from friends who have boats there or have done transient launch and what you want to do.

We have stayed at the RV park that is next to the Chula Vista Marina. The marina has ample parking and a decent bar/restaurant. There is a park in that same area (between the RV park and the bay); very nice during the day, not sure I'd be comfortable walking around there at night. Fenced and gated at the RV park and before going onto the docks. You would have to drive to get to the closest groceries.

When we were there last, there were plenty of boats in the marina. The only "downside" of this marina would be the proximity to San Diego - you are miles down the bay and a 20 minute drive (more, depending on traffic) from the San Diego waterfront and other attractions. Access to Coronado Island via the bridge or looping around to the south.

I'm not sure what the marina prices are, but the RV park was over $100 per night last time we were there.

Plenty to do in San Diego and generally lovely weather.

The step daughter lives in San Diego, pretty much up from the Balboa Park area. Shelter Island seems like a good location. Or maybe a little more north just outside of downtown. My plans are to do the Catalina Cruise, then pull the boat back out at Marina Del Rey, and head down to San Diego to launch. Wife will fly in and we'll spend a week there, staying on the boat and hopefully doing some sightseeing from the Bay. (We've been to San Diego land side, but will probably do some more land touring as well, thus need to disconnect the truck from the trailer.) Should be interesting as I'm not at all familiar with boating there, so there may be some anxiety about boating in the area. Embarassed I believe Shelter Island will allow up to 72 hours parking, but can not disconnect the truck and trailer. What I don't know, since we are going to be there 6 nights, is can I just move the truck and trailer to a different parking spot, for another 72 hours. Mr. Green We can find other modes to get around on the land if we need to leave the truck and trailer together... I'm assuming that getting a slip at the Shelter Island Guest Dock, with reservations, shouldn't be too hard. But I may be completely wrong about that. Would be nice to just have early reservations made for both the boat and truck & trailer before getting there, at some reasonable rates. I was hoping maybe there would be some local Brats there that could share more specific information. Not ruling Chula Vista out, but it is a little farther south than I wanted to be. I did find some more info on the Shelter Island site that provides a phone number for RV or large vehicle parking, and still need to call it.

Colby, George Hone spent a month at Glorietta Marina in Coronado, while towing their 22 C-Dory from Canada through the west coast & southwest. They were really pleased with the set up there. It’s been 10 years so maybe not the same now. He wrote the trip up in this thread. http://www.c-brats.com/viewtopic.php?t=18947&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15
You might try pming him for info.

Jay

Colby, just a suggestion.
Why not launch at the Shelter island ramp, secure a slip at the Police dock, leave your truck and trailer at the launch ramp parking lot (72 hours allowed) move truck and trailer a bit as needed and rent some E-bikes?

Alain, I'm starting to think along those lines....I'm just not sure what the lot setup is like and if I could get away with just moving my truck and trailer around every third day until we leave. Colby

I would never leave a trailer unattached at any public ramp.. especially in Calif. The chances of it being there the next day are slim. I had boat trailers stolen out of locked and patrolled lots in S. Calif.

I suspect that you will probably get a ticket, even moving the truck and boat every 72 hours. They go by license numbers, not location of the truck and trailer.
