This can easily be topped by naming your boat with something that rhymes with some sort of emergency, or a boat name that can't be pronounced, but is cute... _________________ Steve Baum

I have a friend who is retired Coast Guard and does Vessel Safety Inspections in the CGAux. He told me about doing an inspection on a vessel named "My Day" on time. Said that they (CG) had to recommend that the boat name be changed to something else -- almost anything else because of the similarity to the "Mayday" emergency call. It was the owners first power boat and first boat with a VHF.

Harvey,
I too am retired USCG and my comment is based upon my experiences, while actually performing search and rescue, in my first 4 your of duty, while assigned to small boats (CG small boats are boats that are less than 65'), out of Charleston, SC.
Back in the early 70's, we navigated by paper charts and compass. Our VHF communications were not very good and out AM radio was even worse. Add to that, someone calling for help on their poor quality radio transmission... |
