I have twin Yamaha 80's on my CD25. My offshore cruising speed sweet spot is 16-20nmph. I have pushed it to 25-30nmph, but I find it's uncomfortable, both visually trying to spot hazards in the water and physically hitting an odd wave at a bad angle. I routinely have 5-7 people on board (mix of children), and feel my horsepower and props are nearly an ideal match for me. I see no necessity to go up in horsepower and would check with the manufacturer to not exceed recommended max horsepower or transom weight ratings. _________________ Steve & Carmen

Same with my etec 90s. Just thinking for the future since evenrude went under. These won’t last forever. Didn’t know Yamaha had 80s |

Perhaps I am mis-remembering... isn't there a 200hp max rating from the factory? |

JKSWOR,
Years ago, when Yamaha started making 4 strokes, they made 80 HP and 90 HP, both had carbs. They also made the 115 hp and that always was fuel injected. _________________ Steve Baum

Jim is correct that the HP rating of the 25 is 200 HP. I know that most of the early "Cruise ships" originally came with 50 hp.
From what I saw when I was doing the repairs on the 2003 C Dory 25, I owned, I would not put twin 115's on it.
With the single 150 light boat, I get about 30 mph, With fully loaded for a months cruise, freezer, ref, full fuel and water, plus spare etc--I run easily at 18 mph and as the fuel is used can cruise in the low 20's.
I would think with 230 hp it is more than you want to run the boat at. I believe that some with the single Yamaha 200 are seeing in the 35 mph range with light boat and cruising in the high 20's. The boats don't really do all that well at speeds over 30.. _________________ Bob Austin

I really doubt you 2011 motors are going to "die" any time soon if you take care of them. I remember when I got my mine and everyone said they'll probably go for a thousand hours or so. Well.....passed that benchmark about 1500 hours ago. |
