On another thread, 416Rigby said he's off to Anchorage (with the Coast Guard) due to a ship grounding. Here's a news clip:
Quote: | A grounded tanker carrying nearly 5 million gallons of oil and gasoline was stable Friday as crews in Alaska awaited high tide to try again to float the ship, the vessel's owner said.
The 600-foot ship broke loose from its moorings early Thursday morning when it was struck by an ice floe while loading at Tesoro Corp.'s refinery at Nikiski on the Cook Inlet. |

Better go fill up the cars and boats quick, before the oil companies announce a price increase due to this latest interruption of the market supply.! _________________ Sea Wolf, C-Brat #31

Hey thats like 5 miles away from where I live. I drive past that dock every day on the way to work. I'll have to see if they got it loose today. Neat. |

Quote: | Rescue crews refloated a tanker carrying nearly 5 million gallons of oil and gasoline Friday, one day after the vessel ran aground in Alaska's Cook Inlet and caused a small spill, a state official said.
Emergency crews emptied the tanker's ballast water to lighten the vessel and then used three tugboats to pull the double-hulled Seabulk Pride to deeper water during high tide at about 8:30 a.m. , Lynda Giguere, a spokeswoman for the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation.
A fourth ship is accompanying the tanker to break ice in its path, but crews will inspect for any leaks before sending the tanker back out into the sea under it own power. |

Yep...didn't need our particular asset after all...they got her refloated before we even left. Looks like no big spill, which is great news.

The tanker is a double hulled model built in 1998. After refloating it motored to Homer under it's own power with an escort tug. Divers found a 7" and a 4" crack in the outer hull. They were repaired and is off to the south to empty it's load and go onto a dry dock.
All that spilled were 200 gals. and that was from the loading hoses that parted when the ship was pulled away from the dock by ice floes. Most of that was spilled on deck.
The news reports said it was tied up with 16 lines(12 steel and 4 nylon) each with a 178,000 tensile strength. All 16 broke when the ice pulled the boat from the dock....awesome power _________________ On the HIGH TIDE-II, wife Carolyn and I.....Another summer fishing on the HIGH TIDE II in the Cook Inlet at Cape Ninilchik, Alaska.
