Hey Dan (Dogon Dory) and Mark (3rd Byte) in Fairbanks:
Your overnight forcast is:
"Tonight
Mostly clear. Areas of dense ice fog with near-zero visibilities valleys and lower hill slopes. Lows 40 to 55 below...coldest in valleys. Light winds."
Damn that's COLD!!!
These are just like the temperatures here in Redding, but we've got plus instead of minus!
STAY WARM HOWEVER YOU DO IT!

Can I jump in on this one?
Right you are. When it gets that chilly here in North Pole, it gets to be "braggin' weather." At least it ain't windy. And the aurora is spectacular, too.
My little boat is shivering underneath her tent right about now.
Now you know why we have such a great ice carving contest up here each year in March. They have been cutting out blocks that are four feet thick. The ice sculptures around town have been out for about a month now and they probably won't melt until April.
Shivering in the far north,
Pat |

It IS cold! Here's the "nowcast" here in Kodiak.
Strong winds through Saturday night... northwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 55 mph through channeled areas will persist through the night. Visibility will be reduced to less than 1 mile in snow and blowing snow. Wind chills are expected to be from 10 below to 20 below zero through the evening.
But hey, there's always tomorrow...
Saturday
Mostly cloudy in the morning then becoming partly cloudy. Snow showers. Snow accumulation up to 2 inches mainly on the west side of the island. Highs in the teens. Northwest wind 20 to 35 mph. Gusts to 45 mph through channeled terrain. Wind chill readings 5 below to 20 below zero in the morning.
Haven't had the boat out all winter! Last winter was much more mild. Check out the latest marine forcast for Kodiak vicinity...
GALE WARNING THROUGH SATURDAY
HEAVY FREEZING SPRAY WARNING THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT
TONIGHT
NW WIND 40 KT. SEAS 7 FT. SNOW SHOWERS. HEAVY FREEZING

SAT

Yep, I'm guilty of having the foresight to stay in Seattle rather than face the "freaking frigid" temperatures of Fairbanks. Pretty damn smart I'd say. Betty says it's better to be lucky than good.
Anyway, Dan, we'll be back up there as soon as the Dr. gives the final OK on her new hip. The way I've got it figured, that should be right after this extended spell of modestly cool temperatures moves up about 40 to 50 degrees.
In the meantime, may you be warmed by the good wishes of us folks down here in the southerly climes. Won't help much, but it's the thought that counts! _________________ Mark on Mighty Bite |

So last Wednesday night...about 4 hours after dark and finding a great station on sirius radio, my friend and I look at each other as we pass bye the entrance to the marina... the wind blowing about 12 knots, moon out bright, may have been a beverage envolved..... and as we go the the back of the boat to howl at the moon and a bit of relief from the beverages.... he says..... So Byrdman....what ya think those "fellas" from AK that ya met in Seattle are doing tonight.....? Well, we raised a toast to yall,.... and I said, well, I bet two things.... I bet they wish they were out on this boat tonight, and I bet for sure they ain't peeing over the sides of their boat right now! So, don't think we aint got ya all on our minds down here.
Yes, we figured we owed it to those who could not....to just keep cruising about the area for another few hours.... and to think we had to burn about 3 quarts in the wallas to keep the cabin at about 72 degrees.
It sure was great to meet yall in balmy Seattle this year. Come on down.

I sympathize with you guys up in AK; in a normal January we would not be too far behind you on the frigidity scale. But instead we're finishing out the warmest January on record. The last couple of days it's been +40F - even over night! This is all OK with me. As an old friend of mine once said, if this is global warming, let's enjoy it while we can!

Dan, yep, I think Byrdman may have just slipped us a not so subliminal message.
Betty is getting pretty attached (no pun intended) to her new hardware, and is moving around much better than she was before the machinery was installed.
Just think how good it's going to feel when the temp gets up to about
-10. It'll seem like a spring day. You and Paige will probably be out running the dogs with shorts on. |

Hey Dan,
Is town just a blanket of fog from up on the hill or has it warmed up to that magic number so the ice fog is gone and you can see it this morning?
Throw another log on the fire and stay warm. Was fun meeting and talking with you and Mark at the gathering.
Mark, my wife's dad had his 4th hip replacement at 83 about a year ago and he was up and going much quicker than the previous three, so Betty should adapt to this new stuff quite well. Best wishes for a quick recovery and so you can return to the place of HARD water and sun!

Hey Doug, this is Betty's 2nd hip replacement, so she now has a matched set. Recovery on this one is going to be quick, like the first one. She walked home from the hospital to where we are staying on th 4th day after surgery, actually sliightly under 4 full days. Paced off the distance at just under 1/2 mile. |
