Just briefly scanning the web, and finding a lot of used 22' over 5 years old for well over base price plus a new motor. Why is this exactly? I mean, you'd be crazy not to buy a new model, with warrenty. Maybe I'm not looking at the right websites -- although I suppose it would be rare to find one in my area (southwest Florida). I've actually never seen one before in person. I was hoping to find one around $15,000. If not, maybe the 19' is fine, but it looks really small to me... |

portvista,
Welcome to the website! We have lots of info and opinion on the C-Dorys.
The older boats hold their value very well. Also, you have to consider the extras added onto the boats by their owners. The electronics alone can add many thousands!
Remember, that if you sell you will recover your purchase price. I have a 1991 which I have owned since new and it would sell used for what I paid in 1991! (Its NOT for sale.) _________________ Larry H

The used market is always within a few percent of correct in pricing, be it C-Dorys, Harley Davidsons, MGTD's or that funny weed I often see growing in back yards down here. You don't see anyone collecting Bayliners, but I did meet a C-Dory collector here in San Diego a few weeks ago. C-Dory is both a "character boat" and a very useful tool, easily customized and easily loved. You're buying into a family and if the price seems high, keep looking. Occasionally you'll find one for sale by an unsophisticated seller who used NADA to price out their boat. Don't hesitate though because you'll lose. _________________ Mary & Don Anderson

I was in the same boat you were (pun intended) a few years ago. I didn't understand why the "used" prices seemed high. But with some research you will descover why. Bottom line is that they are not mass produced like bayliners ect... and they are very popular.
I think you will find that there still is a gap between the new price and a used one but initially it doesn't look that way until you research all the upgrades. |

I'm actually doing some checking around online for my parents. I own a Polaris 4-stroke 3 seater jetski myself that I like to run around in while my parents take their boat out.
They want to trade their old (I think 22') 350 V8 I/O cabin cruiser in for something easier to maintain. Surely, a 90hp 4-stroke would eat a lot less gas too. I suppose all you're doing is taking money out of an interest bearing account and putting it into a boat that should retain around 70% of its value in 10 years, the motor losing most of that. So it's really that difference, plus gas & maintenance that an eventual fixed income person should be considering. That's why I figure they are looking at the C-Dory, plus the fact that its design should fit at least 4 people comfortably for a day trip. But the 19' looks more like a 2 seater. Rear seating doesn't look practical in the 19' or the 22'.
The smaller cabin cruisers don't tend to allow much room to sit around up top. I told my parents to get a deck boat, but they seem more interested in the C-Dory.
Some of these upgrades aren't really of interest, so maybe new might be better. They don't know how to use a GPS. I told them the best thing they could get is a power anchor. Suprised that's not an option from the factory? |

portvista-- I was looking for a used boat a year ago. In order to finance a used boat it had to be a 95 or newer and at 7 to 8 % interest it would be a $360 dollar payment for the price of boats out there. Then I would have to add all the stuff I wanted on the boat that was not on it or was different then the type of radios, chart plotters, radars etc.. that I wanted. There were a few boats that were priced so I could do that or pay cash but they were sold in days if not hours. After we talked to les at e.q. about the honda finacing at 4.2 % if we put a honda motor on it (not my first choice) then even with the whole wish list of add ons the payment was only $376 a month. It made getting a new boat really easy. Yes its payments for a long time but we plan on paying it of early, as I do everything. Now I have a boat that has everything I want (almost) from the get go. and with the way I use a boat, working on 400 hours this year, i like having the warranty. I hope this helps you think in new directions. _________________ Thomas J Elliott

That seems like a very low payment. Is that for a 22' Crusier? How many years? |

portvista,
I believe the factory does offer the Sprint 600 windlass as an option. It's just not on the CD-22 pricing page. It's listed on the Tomcat 255 pricing page at $1450. Worth every penny. I didn't have one on my boat the first year. I promptly installed the Sprint 600 on my boat before the second season and absolutely love it. There are some other options available for the 22 that aren't listed on the pricing page too. If you want to know about all the options available, contact a dealer. They should have a list and price for all of them.

Yep its a 22 cruiser with the following. full e-80 system with auto pilot and radar, radios, radar arch, downriggers, cavans for the back deck, and all the standard options on the boat. I did not get the electric anchor or the remote for the auto pilot and I wish I had. i think the payments are for 15 years, but like I said I always pay things off early. I will get the archor hoist about the time james gets out of school, right along with a riding lawn mower.. |

my 2 cents ... if you drop down approx 15 post you will see a 22 ft. with most of the bells and whistles ... i think this is on a par with most .. . price the extra's you will see quite a increase on a base price .. . don't count out age if your parents get all the extra's they will learn quite fast how to use them .... lol .. |

I was very impressed with your electronics on the Susan E... is it the C-80 or the E-80 that you have? When we priced ours out, it was with the C-80. Is there enough difference (other than the multiple display link, that we thought we wouldn't need) between the two to reconsider?
TIA and best wishes,

Jim,
There is a lot of difference between the C-80 and E-80. Go to RayNav site for the specifics, but I'm a regular user of both systems. The E-80 is a joy to use but costs quite a bit more and IMO well worth the difference. The picture is much brighter, a whole lot faster when changing pages, etc. The C-80 is more than adequate if one doesn't want to spend the extra thousand bucks or so.

I would like to have the e-80 for the 3-d mapping but its a few thousand more and I just cnat do that . most of the improvments to the system are things that I would not use, cameras, live weather, watching dvds. yes the screens changes are faster but how fast do they have to be? you can only split a second in so many halves. the satilite photos over lay in cool but I cant afford the extra 2 grand. |

I know nothing of these systems, but when you get into the thousands for a GPS, it makes more sense to use a notebook/laptop with a portalble GPS. Then choose the GPS mapping software you want to use. With a laptop, you get a full computer you can use for anything. You can also get online using a cell phone, which is very inexpensive nowadays. Share photos, videos, check email, look-up weather, listen to internet radio, etc. A laptop is invaluable for anyone going on long trips, and you can find decent ones for under $1000, and the screens are much brighter than ones made 3 years ago. |
