a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water. Put it in a spray bottle and you can spray it on the windshield when the salt spray is drying and making a mess. |

Does Magic Eraser remove water spots, Tyboo?
I need to remove some and then use Rain X to prevent.
Jim, thanks for the vinegar/water ratio! _________________ Patrick and Kim Walker

Back to the Amaz. This is a specific water stain remover, which often works when other cleaners don't. Ace Hardware has it. Home Depot advertises that they have it.
The White vinegar is an item we keep aboard for many uses.
Agree with the RainX to avoid the stains.. _________________ Bob Austin

Not real sure but it won't hurt anything to try. My windows are 1996 vintage and have some discoloration throughout the glass so I don't really know how clean they can get, but the Magic Eraser removes the white powdery feeling stuff that seems to collect out of nowhere real easily. Barkeeper's Friend also does a pretty good job on glass.
Be careful with those Magic Erasers. They do an amazing job on gelcoat stains and are kind of addicting. The problem is they take the wax and just a bit of the gelcoat surface with them because they are mildly abrasive. But oh my goodness, they clean up fish blood, rust stains, tree deposits, bird droppings, waterline scum, and just about anything that annoys you to look at with no effort at all. I use the things after a wash and before a waxing to get the stains off. Once it is waxed you can't tell where they were used. |

Just stumbled upon this topic. I had been wondering about this myself. Thanks to all for the great ideas. I have found C-Brats to be such a great resource of knowledge. |

how to super clean with steel wool and then apply rainx |
I would suggest that one avoid steel wool (especially 4/0) on a boat. You will be wondering where all of those little rust spots on the deck and forward pilot house came from. If you want to go that way--Bronze wool, then you will just have green spots! |

Never had a problem with keeping my glass clean (sometimes keeping it full)
in salt waters:
1. Rinse, then soap and water, rinse again
2. Squeegee dry and clean
3. Apply RainX per instructions
Repeat as necessary. No steel wool ever on anything exterior in salted waters.
Aye.

I have used 4/0 steel wool and made a paste of Barkeepers Friend. It took a lot of elbow grease, but did cut through the water spots and then put on Rain X.
It would make sense to start out with your brand new boat and apply Rain X from the get go and keep up with it and then a person would never have a problem.
BTW I never had rust spots from the steel wool, probably because of the Barkeepers Friend paste. I also rinsed and washed after doing that routine.
I'll have to look at Amaz. Thanks Bob! |

The bar keepers friend's oxalic acid will neutralize the rust. Good thought.
The old fashioned way was to use Bon Ami, which we used on our boat glass when I was a kid. It contains "Natural soft abrasives (feldspar and limestone)" (no oxalic acid). |

I was wondering if some of the ScotchBrite pads would do as good at cleaning as the steel wool, and no rust worries. Have Bar Keepers, but have not used it on the glass .... yet.
