Looks like we might have 5 more feet of water this year. Should open up a few more camping spots. _________________ Jody Kidd

I went to Oak Canyon on the 18th and it was too crowded for my tastes. People running generators so that they could power high volumes of bad Rock and Roll from the 1980's. Will try again later.
Yesterday had an afternoon forecast of high winds 20-30 with gusts to 40. Nothing much happened until late afternoon when an updated forecast said that the winds would be later with possible thunder storm and rain (the flash flood likelihood was raised). The wind was really late. Between 10 and midnight the wind howled. When the wind makes my VHF antenna whistle, that's more than 40mph. We were in a tiny slick rock canyon in the lee of a mesa (with no waves but 50 mph gusts} and went hard aground on one side of the slot canyon, which was the best position to be in all things considered. I had a Danforth anchor well up on the tiny creek delta "beach" sunk into the sand and was confident that it would hold. It was more difficult to convince Beth that all was okay.
The houseboat next to us wasn't there when it got light the next morning. I met a couple at Antelope Marina who were leaving (and a little terrorized) because their houseboat "sank" during the storm. Actually, they were on the windward side of the lake and were hit with 5' waves that came aboard and sunk them to the point that the outboards were swamped and they were driven up the beach. They spent several hours in the dark getting hammered. And I was complaining about not seeing a really great thunderstorm.
I'm in Page for R&R and then back on the lake tomorrow. I don't even try to get cell coverage out there.

Hope you enjoy Powell. Stay safe.

We are still hoping to get to Oak Canyon by Oct. 1st, but Dixie had to have some warranty work done last week. Nissen Fundoplication and a Cholecystectomy, so we may not make it. Doc say's a weeks recovery may not be a sufficient time before going bouncing along in a boat. _________________

Our prayers go to Dixie for quick recovery. I would listen to your doctors...As much as I love boats and Powell--recovery is very important.

Sorry to hear about Dixie's medical issues - we send our best wishes for a fast recovery. Lake Powell will be there when she is healed up.

Brent,
I am also sorry to hear about Dixie's medical issues. I agree, make sure she allows time for recovery and healing. You are close enough to Powell like me that it is not hard to schedule another trip if she is not up to it now.

We were sure looking forward to seeing you two there, but know it's best to not push to much to soon. Dixie, we're thinking of you & here's gentle hugs from us.

Brent and Dixie, Take time to heal, and stay safe. You will still probably get to Lake Powell before I do. Wish I was getting there this time but...........later.

Hi Folks,
My son and I were planning to meet you all there on Oct 1..... Alas, I was servicing my water separator filter when I experienced an overheating issue with my new Suzuki 90. I had taken it to the dealer a couple weeks ago and I thought (they said they had) they had fixed it. Still overheating at just idle. Water flow is low. Anyhow, I have to get this fixed and won't make it there until it is rectified.
Sorry I won't be there for the get together. Hopefully, we'll have a chance to get there before the end of the month.
Hope everyone has a great time.

Just got back from two weeks at Powell. Though we saw no falling rocks, we too had one of our houseboat anchors pull out, as the storm clocked around and hit us broadside. We monitored the weather channel daily and knew the storm was coming. We tucked in in the back side of Rock Canyon, behind a clay bar, no waves. I was able to hold the boat against the bank with the engines, until a new deeper hole could be dug for the stbd anchor. No big deal for us.
The boys never caught so many fish, of all kinds. Even landed two perch on Shad crank baits. The bait was half the size of the fish. Really got use out of the dinghy this year. Unfortunately, after a big buildup for the root beer floats at Dangling Rope, when we boated over from Oak Canyon, the cafe was closed for the season. (Thank God for Hall's Marina Cafe.)
Turned the houseboat and family in at Wahweep and trailered E Z DUZIT to Halls Crossing for another few days of fun. Spent a wonderful afternoon on TWO BEARS. Saw several CD22s, a CD25, and a CD16 already on the lake.
Hope everyone's stay will be as pleasurable as ours was. _________________ I DON'T KNOW WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR - That's what makes the search so exciting! |
