Hi I am a first time C Dory owner and am adding a bait tank and have not had the boat on plane. (the engine needs work first) I am trying to figure out the best place to install the 24 gal. tank.
The gas tank is also 25 gal. so should I mount the tank in the opposite corner or the middle of the boat? I was thinking that the gas and bait tanks would even each other out if they were both at the transom...I could also place the tank a foot forward from the transom, but would it make a difference in trim and performance? A previous owner said he used to put some ballast in the bow so I was wondering what effect that tank will have overall.
Thanks in advance for your advice!

Welcome! Here's where it was on our angler. with two batteries and a kicker on the other (starboard) side and a Permatrim to keep the bow down it worked out well.

I had a 16 with a Yamaha 40 hp. Make sure you balance it correctly because my boat would always list in one direction. If you can fit the bait tank next to the fuel tank then that sounds like a good plan. I'm surprised you have a 25 gallon fuel tank, mine was only 12. That's cool.

As the previous owner of the boat said, you may want to put some weight in the v storage area forward. You may also want to add trim tabs. My 16 never had trim tabs but i was gonna add them if I kept the boat longer.

Another idea would be to put the batteries in the v storage area but they would probably have to be AGM type versus the standard kind so maybe you might not wanna do that.

Have fun with the boat. Its great that you're being conscious of the weight distribution. I never worried about that but it became annoying when the boat would constantly pull to the starboard side. Lol.

Upload some pictures!

I am amazed that anyone would consider running their 16' Angler with 25 gals of fuel! I have 2 --6 gal. standard portable Atwood tanks that fit perfectly under the splash well. And we have been is some nasty sea conditions and they stayed put. We have got from 6-9 mpg so if you're conservative 2 tanks will give you a 50 mile round trip with a good reserve left. Yes and you could place a 3 gal portable in your forepeak too. Being portable means filling them anywhere you please, and I do. Now to weight: The USCG weight rating for motor - fuel--passengers and gear is 1150lbs in total on the Angler 16'err . Gas weighs about 8lbs a gal & 25 x 8 = 200lbs of fuel! Why would you want to carry an extra 100 lbs of fuel in your stern area and make it slower to come up on plane? Further - if you have a 50 Yamaha at 250 dry weigh - then a 50lb kicker - then a battery and maybe 2 downriggers - That gets to be a lot of weigh in the stern area. Now get caught in a following sea and see if you feel an extra 100 lbs of fuel back there is necessary - or even safe.
