GPH average on 2005 EFI engines

For all of you who own EFI engines and have fuel management gauge, what is your average fuel consumption. I have 100hrs and have used 226 gallons to date. Gary

What was the average speed for those 100 hrs. ? At 10 kts, that equates to about 5MPG - better than some tow vehicles....

Rogerbum that is what my fuel gauge is telling me . I cruise at avarage 14 to 17 mph, at $5.17 Can. I find those speeds to be adequate where we live in the gulf Islands. You also have to remember that those 100 hrs are not all cruising , they are idling, trolling, site seeing, more fishing. Gary

Roger had it correct -- average. Next time out just log your average speed (it's on the GPS somewhere) and log that and at the end of your next summation you'll have a figure to work with. Mine is usually 6 knots (I'm putting around most of the time since the name on the chart for my area is "The Devils Rock Garden" (no joke).

...with my F-115 Yami' (2000 EFI) its between 3 and 6 mpg!
This last weekend, overloaded (5-peeps with a bunch of goodies and the boats usual rigging intact) got 3.25 mpg. Journey was about 1/3 open-sea running (tons-a-fun Thumbs Up

) When alone on perfect water conditions I have actually gotten close to or right at 6 mpg Xmas Eek

I just looked up the log on Two Lucky Fish - we have had her for ~14 months, running a J-90 Johnson. It has been a dream so far - but it is probably time to bring her in for service!

We've burned 795 gallons, 410 engine hours and per the log on the knotmeter (terribly inaccurate I know) 2378 miles. If my math serves me...3 nautical miles/gal with an average speed of 5.8 kts. Oh - maybe I should use some calculus here to get a better number?

There are many hours on the Honda kicker as well - but I don't know if they are tracked on the fuel meter if the J-90 isn't running. It probably doesn't make much diff - since the Honda doesn't burn any fuel and we never went very far on it...

Interesting...maybe I should get a tune-up? (before you all yell at me..I have been changing the oil at least - but it isn't easy to get service when the boat stays in the water and is used year around!) Who wants to miss Salmon/Crab/Cruising season in the Pacific Northwest?

I also have the Johnson 90. During the Desolation Sound trip, looing at the fuel flow gage, I was using 7 to 8 gal/hr at speeds from 14knts to 20knts. If I slowed to 6knts I was using 1.2gal/hr. From my calculations I was getting 5 nautical mpg at 6knts and only a little over 2 nautical mpg at cruise. I know I was very heavy with a large icechest, dingy, and lots of stuff inside. Could it be that the Johnsons are not a efficient?

From general observations and calculations, my 90 hp Yamaha ('05) seems to average about 4 1/4 or so mpg at cruise speeds of 14-22 mph, and about 4 gph., although the WOT numbers are much less efficient, and the sub-planning figures a lot better. Joe.

Good question Steve - although since they don't sell the 4 cycle 90 HP Johnsons in the US anymore (only E-Tecs now), I doubt that anyone is gonna buy another one anyway.

I've never been able to get close the the run numbers C-Dory publishes - ~4.4 nm/gal with the Honda 75. With normal load, planing, I get 3.3 nm/gal. If I fill the fresh water tank,etc - it drops to 3nm, and with 1/2 water tanks, partial fuel, 1 person, etc- I get over 3.5 nm. Converting to mpg, that's ~4.2 - so it is not far off from what other C-Brats have posted. I didn't even look at economy when we were loaded in Desolation Sound. The boat was barely afloat as it was!

I suspect the extra stern weight of the J-90, along with the 9.9 4 cycle Honda kicker, dual batteries, floor pads, etc - cause the mileage to drop. But I really like EFI, and the 30 (or is it 40?) amp charger on the J-90 - it really helps. So, given what was available at the time, I'm pleased with the J-90. Today, I'd look really seriously at the E-Tec
