Heard about these this morning on "The Outdoor Line", a Saturday morning fishing show on KIRO radio. Sound very high-tech; more hours between servicing, some revolutionary exhaust system...
Maybe I'm old school, but the exterior design is just plain ugly to me. It's like they wanted them to look futuristic, like a stealth fighter.

Boats that will actually be using 300 hp will look pretty good with that engine on behind. I hope they keep the clean Old look for the 150 hp's on down. The motor design would be a hard sell for me. But, I think E-tech will continue to lead OB technology for years to come. I think you will see merc suzi, yami and others moving to the fuel oil computer injection systems. My Suzie's will out live me by quite a few years, but if I was re-powering, e-tech would be my immediate choice. I own one, so I know a bit about them. It is lower horsepower for sure, but lighter, much more torque, and sips fuel and oil. Nope, don't own stock in the company.
I think this new design will be a tough one to get onto boats other than the "i've got the latest design" boaters. I can see two or three of those 300's on the big go fasts and looking pretty nice on that type of boat. _________________ You can tell a man his wife is ugly, but never ever criticize his dog, his gun, his truck or his boat.

That is quite a look. When I first see them it looks to me like they are falling off the transom - already at a 45º angle "gone." Not my style (I'd like it in a Lightwin cowling please ), but to each their own. |

Agreed! Pretty ugly! Lots of sharp angles. Futuristic design is probably intended to attract attention and create interest in updated technology. Whose idea was the Edsel, anyway?
Could have the "shocking" appearance reduced a lot with softer 2 color only paint job with emphasis on horizontal lines and turning the "Evinrude" label 90 degrees. Please hand me that spray can of black paint, Bubba!

I don't own any red pants. I usually just try to of blend in. Those motors pictured in the link just look like the designers went a little overboard on with the glitzy styling and colors. Not my cup of tea. I like Yamaha's subtle grey. I've owned four Yamaha outboards and have not had a reason to change. I just thought Edsel when I saw the motor in the link.

Maybe they figure market to some new younger boaters. All us old guys will sunset with our traditional looking motors. Just a thought. _________________

I find the integrated power steering and drive-by-wire most interesting. The thought of someday getting rid of hydraulic lines and cables from the helm to the motor is compelling. Whether that makes it down to the smaller size motors we use remains to be seen. |

The (current) E-Tecs are (also) funny that way. The 90 is so light, but then when I was boat shopping for my 22 there was one that came up with twin 40 E-Tecs so I looked up the specs -- and surprisingly, they are the heaviest of the 40's. Guess the lightness didn't scale.
Honda 40 = 214#
Yamaha 40 = 214#
Suzuki 40 = 229#
E-Tec 40 = 240#
So a pair of Honda or Yamaha 40's on a 22 would be 428#, but a pair of the "light" E-Tecs would be 480#. (But then the E-Tec 90 is the lightest 90 one could have as a main.)
Anyway, back to the future....  |

That 557 also looks "futuristic" but appealing. The Evinrude just looks cheap and tacky. |

There are many color combinations available. I actually like the futuristic look. Remember the motor is just a small part of the overall boat look.
Rigging is simplified regarding wiring and plumbing runs.
The power steering is adjustable.
Lower unit oil level and quality can be monitored with the motor in the water. |

Forget the look I like the new access design to the motor. Finally some one built a removable panel that allows access to the whole motor and not just the top half. Trying to get the bottom half of the cowlings off a honda is a pain and doing it in the water is a hazard.
This new etec has a lot of upgrades the will be coming standard in the future. Electronics shift and steering being the first two. Also the weight is the same if you count in the oil reserve which is serrate on some of the older engines. That was in a review I read yesterday.
this motor is targeted to to major boating groups. Bass fisherman and offshore sport fishing. I predict they will sell like hot cakes. ( why do hot cakes sell so well??) If you think these color designs are ugly you should look at the tournament boats. Load , bright and ugly do not do them Justice _________________ Thomas J Elliott

As far as looks go the only thing I personaly dont like is the white accent on the top. If the side panels come in different colors and you could get it to match the stripe on your boat it would look pretty good. My opinion only. _________________ Chuck
