That's just a speaker, like the Big Jawbone Jambox. You still need something to receive or store music on that has Bluetooth connectivity. Sorry if you knew that already!

To do over I would go blue tooth. We went with a pioneer head unit and some Kenwood marine speakers under the rear dinette seat. Originally we put our speakers built into our overhead panel
These were great for the times we were up and running but you had to basically blast out the cabin to hear it out on the cockpit while fishing. also when we installed the Lowrance point one for overlay and heading sensor this winter these would not allow it to calibrate and caused too much interference so for the time being they are removed and I will have to remake the wood cover this summer sometime. While removing I noticed how much they interfered with my compass also.
Now we only have the two Kenwood speakers and they can be heard both in the cockpit and in the cabin fine. And will probably just stick to having only these two speakers for sound. They are marine grade and have good sound quality.
We almost always have the stereo on and have not had a problem with draw or batteries going dead. Again blue tooth is nice we don’t do cd's, the head unit has a USB and aux on the front and we plug our iPhone into that. The plus being if you use USB it will charge phone while it plays (we use it this way when under power). thought I would throw a few pics in as drilling speaker holes to find out they interfere or don’t let sound travel well, then have to re-drill is a pain the holes are not small. |

We use an original Jawbone Jambox - bluetooth from the phone or iPad, but most often with a cable to a portable (smaller than my phone) XM receiver. No holes to cut/fill, you can take it into the cockpit, or take it home with you. Easy.

One advantage of a fixed mount unit is that it's fixed mount. E.g. if you want to hear the music while running in sloppy stuff, it can be hard to keep a moveable unit from falling off the dash, table etc. I used to use a portable, rechargable stereo/ipod dock in my 22. It worked great for slow cruising and while at the dock, it wasn't so good for motoring out to the fishing grounds or to listen to in the cockpit while fishing in the rain. For those purposes, a fixed mount with marine speakers is better. It all depends on the intended use. _________________ Roger on Meant to be |

Especially with the smaller units that don't weight much. Just use adhesive backed Velcro in your choice of colors to lock it down. Ours weighs about 2 lbs and two small patches of Velcro lock it down with no problem. No holes! |

these are all great replies, thanks guys. and thanks for the pics Jake.
I am starting to lean towards the bluetooth speaker setup. anyone have any opinion in regards to the jambox vs the bose for sound quality?

I think we would mostly rely on our smart phones. my wife and I run newer androids and both are bluetooth. my fishing buddy uses an iphone as well and keeps too many songs to count on it. as long as I have reception, i like the idea of accessing Pandora too for streaming music. I do have a much older ipod that was given to me years ago that I never use, but I could load a lot of music on there and access most of these speaker setups with an auxiliary cable is seems too. the detached speaker is seeming better and better to me. being portable so I can hear it in the cockpit is nice. |

Have sold Bose Speakers, a long long time ago (1970s), they are great speakers, cannot speak to the bluetooth version. We have had the Big Jawbone Jambox since they came out, it is very very good, IMHO. Use it as a speaker from the ipad, a cell phone etc. There's a mini version too but never tried it.

Yesterday, I bought the blue-tooth Bose Mini Soundlink for my wife (it's her birthday today). It sounds pretty darn good for such a small package (but it should for $200). Plenty of volume and surprisingly good bass. She's happy with it. |

SO I was completely sold on the blue tooth bose for even $300 ish. I figured I get Bose quality for 1/2 of what entry level would cost to be installed. but yesterday when that groupon coincidentally landed in my email inbox I figured at $89 for the jawbone, which I've seen people on here mention multiple times, it was a sign from God. so I ordered it. When it comes it I'll test it out right away. I'm sure anything is better than what I have but I'm excited about the portability of these bluetooth units. I liked the blue one, but red matched the boat, but the wife says grey is more neutral...lol. I figured lets get the neutral one because if I decide later to upgrade to the Bose I can move the jawbone to house use only. which could still be nice for BBQs or something when people are over. I am constantly listening to music. (like right now)
There is something to be said for the peace and quiet of nature without extra noise, but sometimes there's something about having a theme song for your adventure too.

so our Jawbone/jambox arrived yesterday (8pm by UPS, I had no idea they delivered that late).
I can't compare it to the Bose, but generally speaking here's our response. My wife immediately said she should have bought 2 or 3.
The sound quality is great. the bluetooth syncs quickly and I was able to walk a long ways away and not lose the connection. its loud, small (smaller than I thought from the pics) and sounds very nice. we were tinkering with it for a solid hour last night. convenient for camp fires, and everything else we had in mind. super happy about this purchase, we might get another. |
