Hello to all,

Thought I would share a video from our B.C. vacation this past Summer. Pretty awesome cruising area in central and northern B.C. This was taken in Ursula channel near Bishop Bay hot springs. We had been watching several humpbacks from a distance for a while before this particular whale came over to take a closer look at us. The encounter ends at 06:15.

Wow, impressive. Beautiful sighting.

When humpbacks have come close to Journey On, my only thought was: that whale is bigger than the boat.

Karl, thank you much for sharing your very enjoyable to view video. You kept your calm better then us when we had that happen twice while on the C-Dory & once in a small 12.5 foot RIB. The boat seems very small & the whale mighty big when they are only a short distance directly below. I was amazed at how well it could be seen in your video, while under you & just off to the side. On the times they were below us, we could only see a dark moving mass.

this is way way cool. last week we saw a bunch of them in hawaii, watched a competition pod, and saw a calf with mom..... but the water is clearer in your video and that one looks way bigger. This is really neat to have seen them last week in their breeding rounds, and then in your video up in CA. how deep was the water where you were? I'm envious of your encounter! Beer

The water in Ursula channel is upwards of 1500 feet deep. We had probably 300 feet of water below us when we had the encounter. We do use an uv filter on our camcorder so I'm sure it helped. The lack of wind for a couple days prior probably helped as well. Humpbacks are amazingly graceful and I have no doubt there is a lot of intelligence there also. Glad you were able to see those whales in Hawaii.

Jay, calm is not the word I would use to describe how I felt. More like accepting that the whale was in control of the encounter. Hoping to add a hydrophone for our next trip so we can listen to them while we watch.
