For all you brats in the LA area that are looking for a place to store and use their boat in the LA Harbor area we just moved Far C'r into Cabrillo Way Marina Boat Storage. Cabrillo Way Marina is a brand spanking new marina with fantastic facilities and now the boat storage section just opened. The new area also has a large dry storage yard that will accommodate 350 boats on trailers up to 45 feet in length. The boats are launched from cranes on the site, and sailboats may leave their rigging and masts up. Washdown water is available now, and electricity is expected in the yard soon.

For us it is very ideal, you get 1 free launch/retrieval a day. The yard has a small tug that grabs your boat takes it to and from the hoist. The hoisting straps stay on your trailer and are custom fitted. There is an area with electricity for small boat maintence chores, water washdowns, etc.

The LA Harbor area is a very interesting location, miles of which is behind a large breakwater and a great launching off spot to head for Catalina Island. After the holidays we will be getting our straps and will be able to put into the water, hopefully before we lose all this beautiful weather we have been having!

I have added an photo album of the facility here;

I was by there the other day and wondered what all that fenced off area was. I would guess that having it launched off the trailer is the ideal way; you can use it quickly and still not have it in the water.

I would also guess that there's still no launch ramp in Redondo Beach?

If you're going to have your boat down in Cabrillo Marina, you might check out the Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club, right around the corner.

Just talked to Mike at the dry storage area. You must store your boat at the marina to use the lift to launch your boat. The max weight for the lift is 10,000 lbs. Open air storage for a 30' parking spot is $240 per mo. Hrs are 7am to 7pm. Slips are available at $1.00 per ft, per night. There is a washdown area.

Mike will call me if public launching becomes available in the future.

How things change! My dad put his boat in a 22 street marina, about where Cabrillo Beach YC is now, in 1946. The boats were tided to pilings. Docks came much later. You had to dinghy out to the boats, and carry your dinghy to a storage upside down on the ground or take them home on top of the car (no inflatables).

A few years later we moved over to Hanchet's right next to Fleitz Brother's Marina was located most of this area now seems to be the new "Cabrillo Way Marina--and the street name used to be Miner Street. The other side of Miner was where merchant ships docked--even a few passanger ships back then. Very shabby area in comparison to what it is now! Docks were on logs, and it was not unusual for them to become water logged. Oil spills were not unusual. Lots of coal dust from the loading facility down the road, and the Kelp factory across the way....!

There is a public boat launch ramp off Shoshonean Drive in San Pedro, which is fairly close to this area, off the San Pedro Peninsula. This is a bit of a distance from Redondo Beach. As for Redondo Beach, there have been two 5 ton public boat lifts in the harbor--a C Dory in and out is $35.

REDONDO BEACH -- A revitalization project designed to bring the community back to the Redondo Beach waterfront will also bring something that has long been requested by local boaters: A public boat launch ramp. The ramp would replace a hoist that has long-served vessels in the harbor. "

I imagine the harbor has changed alot since 1946! The Revitalization they are doing now is very welcome.

Yes, since I live a mile from the Redondo Pier where that hoist is and that was my first solution to being an Urban boater but when I found out about Cabrillo Way it was a wish come true. I can call them up in the morning and tell them I want the boat in the water at such and such time so when I get there it will be all ready to go!. I won't have to trailer the boat to launch and the big thing is having water and accessible electricity that I didn't have at the storage place I was keeping her.

This entire area has changed, with lots dredge and of fill; The San Pedro Boat Works used to be about where your parking lot is, and the coal terminal was added further out later.

It is interesting that very few rack storage, especially indoor rack storage has been developed in Calif. Were as much of the storage is rack storage under cover in Florida, and many other places on the East coast. There appears to be less demand for this type of storage so far.

Remember this is historically called "Hurricane Gulch" for a reason! The wind really builds here in the afternoon.

Happy to report that we finally got our setup completed and we launched for the first time. Really nice to be back on the water!

Most of items that you want to keep with self storage companies are environmental sensitive. Therefore, it is one of the most important factors to consider when choosing a self storage company.
