Changing the impeller on my new boat next weekend. It has a 2005 Honda 90. I was wondering if you have to drain the lower unit oil before dropping the lower unit? I have the diagram and instructions for replacement, but there is no mention about draining the oil.

Thanks,

Dan McPartlin

No, the gear box is well below the impeller. However the gear oil is probably best changed each year. Not only changing the gear oil is important, but also checking for water--as often the seals of the lower unit can be damaged--by fishing lines.

I'd be interested to here how this works out and how you surmounted any problems you come across. I have a 2008 BF90 and need to think about changing the impeller soon (probably in the spring).

The impeller on a Yamaha 40 I had failed when I ran it after it sat for about 5 months over the winter. That engine had about 150 hours on it. My Honda has about 180 on it now. Since it will sit for a couple of months due to winter, I don't think I'll change it now.

I've changed out the impellers in my twin Honda 90s this summer. No need to drain the oil to do the job. It's an easy job.

The only difficulties that I had (and it wasn't really difficult) is that the lower unit didn't just slide easily off once I removed all the nuts. I had to gently persuade it with a rubber mallet. Also, trying to get the greased up hard rubber impeller vanes to bend so it fits in to the housing and stays there ended up taking longer than you'd think.

It probably took me about 45 minutes on the first engine and about 20 on the second once I knew what I was doing.

To Sobelle,

Here is a link to a discussion board that has a copy of the manual for changing a honda 90 impeller in one of the posts. I couldn't figure out how to copy and paste the attachment into this forum.

http://www.marineengine.com/boat-forum/showthread.php?400985-Honda-2008-BF90D-water-pump-impeller-replacement.

Appreciate everyone's response. Absolutely loving this boat!

Thanks for the link.

Any idea what the lower unit weighs once it is disconnected from the motor?

I realize this is an old topic... After changing my water pump, water jacket manifold, thermostat, fuel pumps and setting the valves in my carbureted 90 hp Honda last month, I wish that I had a photo document of the process, to make life easier for those that need to do this job in the future.

My engine was "making oil" due to a bad fuel pump and it was time to perform other maintenance, so that is the reason for the service of the above items.

I am now doing almost the same job on my neighbors Honda 90 hp fuel injected engine. This time I am taking a photo of each step in the process.

Here is where I need help... I need someone to aid me in getting these photos into a usable format to publish to the C-Brats site, so that everyone can use this as an aid in the future to perform these routine maintenance items.

There may be others here who are in a better position to assist you, but I am willing to try. I am relatively new to C-Brats, so I've just gone thru what it takes to get photos going on this site.

The first thing to do is to PM TyBoo (who is one of the administrators for this site) to request that an album be created for you. Once that is done, you can use the links that come with the album to add sub-albums under that initial album, or to add photos at either the album or the subalbum level.

The file format is what just about every camera outputs; namely, JPG. I believe the C-Brats website software automatically reduces the size of whatever JPG files you upload so that they "fit" the restrictions of the photo section of this website.

I didn't find the user interface within the album structure to be particularly intuitive, but if you fool around with it, you will likely figure it out (and the logic of it will slowly dawn on you Wink ).
