C-Brats,
Our 22' Cruiser has the 2 parallel factory top rails on the cabin. We would like to add a wrap around front rail that mounts to the top of the visor and cabin. I've seen one on a TomCat that wraps around the cabin on top and is about 6' long. Anyone know where we can get one? In rough seas when making the journey to the bow you run out of railing, this will give us a safer journey forward.
Thanks, SO _________________ Silver Orcas |

I installed two 12 (or so) inch rail sections, one on either side that is bolted through the fiberglass above the windows. got the idea from C-cakes. This worked well on our CD22 during our summer cruise to Kyuquot sound and the Broughtons. You can pick up the brackets at quite a few places. _________________ Mike and Monica Jackson, Victoria, BC

The Tom Cat cabin is wider than the C Dory 22's cabin, so that railing would not fit. The factory can tell you who makes their railing currently.
I have also put an 4 extra hand holds on the cabin roof of the 22's and 25's I have owned. I put one on each side aft on the cabin house thru the over hand of the roof lip, and forward as in the photo below. This gives you a constant handhold from the time you leave the cockpit until you can reach the bow rail. (using the inner factory rail in the middle).
You could put a longer one in the middle if you wished. I also put these type of hand rails in front of the galley (good hand rail as well as towel rack). With boats which have a forward facing front seat, I put one of these on the forward bulkhead "dash" on the port side. _________________ Bob Austin

I've done the two in the front like the previous picture (more or less) on my CD-22 (12 in rails). I will probably do the same thing in the back for getting from the cockpit to the side rail and back, also like in the picture. |

A railmaker, who specializes in fabricating custom safety rails for sail and powerboats, can build you anything you can imagine out of stainless or aluminum tubing, but, of course, for a cost.
Still, if it would save your life
Also/P.S./On Edit:
Also, one can add handles to the forward trunk above the v-berth on either side of the Bomar Hatch to add one more set of safety hold-ons in the "no man's land" between the hood and the bow pulpit.
Another idea: If you know you're going to be anchoring or operating in rough conditions, tie a line (jack line) between the hood or cabin top handles and the bow pulpit to hold onto when going forward.
