Bob,
I'm sorry to hear that. I would have words with Apple about it because as a I understand it, anything that you have paid for and downloaded should remain yours, either on your computer via your I-tunes account or on the cloud.
I prefer my laptop as I feel that I have (marginally) better control over it.
I think you must be right about them using the cloud as my computer knows what I have purchased even before I sync my I-pad via the USB.
Good job I have no paranoid tendancies or I would be listening for those big black helicopters...
Hope to see you in FH. We can compare apps.

Wondering how much space the app and download takes. I'd like to put on wife's iPad, but it is 16G wifi pad, and I don't want to overload it. Thanks, Ron |

Ron,
I have a 16M I-pad with Navionics plus a load or "stuff" on it and I have used a total of 4M. I did this deliberately because the difference in price between the units does not equate to the difference in price of the storage and is equal to quite a few gallons of gas which I can enjoy.
Depends on how you want to use it. The great benefit of synching your I-pad to either a cloud or your home computer is that you can store a load of goodies and control what you carry on the I-Pad. Only takes minutes to re-arrange it.
The easy way (which Apple marketing loves) is to pay your money up front and go for 64G and take it all with you. Bet you won't use more than 10% of it on any given trip

Here are some of the numbers on down loads:
What I have downloaded on the Navionics, includes entire gulf coast Houston to East Coast of Florida, including Keys and Ochochebee Waterway, the entire Mississippi and Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, Tenn river systems, some lakes in Al, Ga and FL, Lake Powell, the S Calif channel islands, San Franscisco to Sacramento and the PNW form Tacoma to inside North end of Vancouver Island including all of the inlets:
555 MB
In comparsion Navimatics (for Active Captain)
Gulf Coast: 361MB
US & CANADA WEST: 647 MB
US & CANADA EAST: 572 MB
WEATHER HD 331 MB
DICTIONARY 141 MB'
HI DEF WEATHER RADAR: 7.3 MB
WUNDER MAP: 526 KB
I did get my Navimatics back for no cost. Same on some weather apps.
The only "loss" is items which Navionics seem no longer to offer.
Also with OS 5, when it seems when I get a new app on the i pad, it appears on the i phone (if available for both). _________________ Bob Austin

That is a neat unexpected feature. Willie just got a new iPhone and her apps from her iPad appeared on the phone. _________________ Walldog aka Herb Stark

I had trouble finding the Navionics App for the USA Marine & Lakes several days ago. This evening it did appear in a search in the iTunes store. I purchased and downloaded Marine & Lakes HD for $34.95. It covers Alaska, the lower 48 states, & Hawaii. I didn't need any Canadian charts. The app required iOS4.3 or later. It was 11.5MB and version 2.5.1. It was updated Mar 22, 2012, perhaps that's why I couldn't find it a few days ago. _________________ RichardAK |

Thanks all for all the info. I think I'll try it. It'd be nice to have the lakes included. Guess the next thing is to order a bluetooth gps puck. RB |

RichardAK with 11.5 MB you cannot have many charts down loaded on the I pad. I would get what you will need (if there are more) while you are near Wi Fi or at least cell service (if you use 3G) because unless you have downloaded the charts in details, you will only have the base map, which is pretty crude. I always get more charts than than I think I will need, since you never know when you might fall over the edge....of the chart. |

Thanks Dr. Bob,
I had only loaded the App and not any charts. The 11.5MB was probably the size of the App. Loaded the chart of Prince William Sound and now its available on my iPad. Looks like a pretty neat App. |

Just to correct my previous post, my I-pad is of course 16 GB not 16MB what's in a few BOAT units between friends
I have detail charts from Seattle to Alaska plus other stuff and I have used about 5G total.
Since it backs up to my computer (or I could use that cloud of which we have plenty in the PNW) I imagine I could "park" a load of stuff if I ever had a capacity problem and retrieve it later.

Well, you could load up that TomCat and head out in search of good signals. |

The price of the app keeps going up and the current price for US +Canada is $54.99. This is for the HD version.
I am using this on a 4g Ipad3. Can anyone who has used this HD version comment on how it is better than the cheaper versions (non HD) versions of the program. |
