My Wallas 1300 has a slight kerosene odor when starting up. If you have some windows cracked a bit there will always be a little smell. After it is up to temperature that goes away. |

Hey Sunbeam - during safety training for hazardous fumes we were told that when you open a door and notice a "slight" smell - the brain only registers an alert for the first few breaths - then trys to catalogue it as normal.
I have lived "off grid" since 1979 - for about the first 6 years we used coal oil lamps. I never minded the smell but when somebody new came in - that seemed to be the first thing they noticed.
A boat is a small area though - I sometimes get clausterphobic sleeping in the cuddy - afraid I'll suck up all the oxygen - never shut the cuddy door!

We've had a Wallas 1800 installed in our 25 for 5+ years now. It is mounted under the sink counter. Tight fit but works well there. I have noticed a kersosene smell occasionally on start up depending on the wind conditions. It has never been a problem for us. I have three duct outlets. One under the drivers footrest, one just back of the sink and one in the toilet. (nice warm seat in the cool mornings) The amount of air the 1800 moves in not that significant but it is just enough to keep the cabin about 70 degrees or so when the outside temp is about 45 or so. The 1800 is great at keeping condensation at bay. Last cruise of 4 days in Desolation Sound at the end of October, temps about 45 degrees and rain two days out of 4 we were warm and dry the whole time. The heater ran for most of the 4 days even when running at 18 knots. The Wallas 1800 has run flawlessly the entire time we've had it. I think its a great fit for the 25 and probably the 22. Its very quiet and uses very little power, so its no problem to leave it running at anchor.
Cheers

Thanks for the additional input. Ron, I was especially interested to hear about your experience with the 1800 - thanks for taking the time.

My question is how easy is it to retrofit the Wallas 1800 on a CD-25?
I am considering ordering a new 25 with the electric/butane cooktop and just use a portable electric heater for cool days on the Chesapeake. My boating season will be April - October.

I haven't fitted one (obviously), but I have read a few thread inputs by those who have, and I've spent some time noodling it under the galley on the 22. (Check Dora Jean's and Life of Riley's albums for a 1300 installation on a 25 and a 22 - there are good photos and commentary.)
I'd say it's not that hard, for a boat project. In other words, you'll be in a cramped location, making dust and holding up heavy parts But no, seriously, it doesn't look that bad to me, and if you're doing the installation you may take the (extra) time to save a bit of stowage space here and there (whereas someone you are paying can't always justify that extra hour or two [that they are billing you] to save a tiny bit of space, or whatever.
One good comment was to remove the sink while you're doing the installation to make it less back-breaking. On my 22, the "obvious" options seemed to be under the galley - either against the hull side, or on the forward or after bulkhead of the galley lower unit. I don't know if there might be a third option in the storage locker aft of the dinette on a 25.
There is an exhaust through-hull that needs to be placed (location dependent on where you put heater; there has to be a certain "swan neck" to the exhaust pipe); on my boat, and with the through-hull holes I already have, it looked like it might be easier to swap the sink drain hose with the (existing, smaller) Wallas outlet through-hull, as sink drain hose is a lot more forgiving to run than metal exhaust pipe. You won't have the same holes to re-use (since you will have no Wallas stove already), so you'll probably have more freedom to locate it.
Take these comments with a grain of salt since I have only "planned" an installation but not done one.

Don't remember if the 25 has the center support between the doors under the galley or not. If it does, it can be removed (sawed out) and a matching piece of starboard (same color as front of galley) affixed to one of them that would have to be closed first when both of them are closed. Doesn't alter the look if you do a careful fit.
I did it on my TC and it gives great access to the under counter space, even without taking sink out.

Too late to edit but here's a picture of the 25 under galley..
Apparently early 25's had no center support but later added one. I still believe it could be cut out as on my TC255. See above post. Without that post, it's a lot more accessable. The little door added at the bottom helps too!

RE: Wallas heater/Stove...for me the wind conditions were critical. I've tried all three (diesel, kerosene and Kleen Heat) and Kleen Heat was the only product that had no smell inside the cabin.
In my present boat I have a Webasto which runs on diesel from the fuel tank and I've never had a problem with smell inside or out. _________________ There’s only one success – to be able to spend your life in your own way.

We contacted Scan Marine regarding a heater for Chack Chack and they recommended the Wallas 30DT for a CD 25, since we are happy with our Origo cooktop Our neighbor owns River Hawk boats here in Southern Oregon - http://www.riverhawkboats.net - and kindly volunteered his rigging department head to do the install. We will post some pictures after the heater is installed. We opted to keep the diesel tank out of the cabin and will place it aft on the starboard factory battery tray as we have previously relocated the batteries

We run a Wallas 30 DT on the Rosborough and it is very effective. There is no smell from the unit itself or the tank but on start-up there is often a temporary smell from the exbaust until it reaches full operating temperature. You only notice this if outside or if the wind happens to be blowing the wrong way.
Pay attention to the position of the exhaust outlet. It would be embarassing for it to coincide with any of your fenders or the dock
