Warren,
You could experiment by borrowing an anchor and rope rode (or maybe you have a stern anchor?) and leave your chain at home. If your chain is 1/4 in, 300 ft weighs 240lbs + or - . I have found that a 200 lb person in the v-berth puts the bow down and that much weight even more forward would prevent the bow from lifting to the waves.
I carry 30 ft of 1/4 in chain and 300 ft of 7/16 nylon rode and no windlass on the bow anchor(16.5 lb Bruce anchor). This bow anchor gear has been adequate from So Cal to Southeast Alaska. I also have a 13 lb Danforth with chain and rode for a stern anchor or for soft mud. The Bruce hold in everything but soft mud (not enough fluke area for mud). _________________ Larry H

Warren-
Welcome aboard, and congratulations on your new C-Dory!
Most of us seem to agree the boat rides through the waves easier light in the ends at lower speeds, but the bow down trim, either due to motor trim, trim tabs, or bow weight really helps when busting through moderate chop by holding the sharper bow of the boat down to split the waves better.
I really agree with having some weight in the bow if the sea conditions one usually encounters will allow it, and I agree with you that the best way to balance out a boat is to move passengers and gear around rather than dragging some appendage through the water to compensate for poor loading! For certain types of anchoring, I also think that the all chain rode works very well.
I converted over from a traditional set up of 15 feet of chain and 150 feet of nylon to substitute 100 feet of chain for the 15, and the added 63 lbs of weight was immediately noticeable in the ride in chop. The boat also required less trim as a result.
That 300 feet of chain (assuming it's the High Test G4 1/4" type) weighs 222 lbs, and your fully loaded CD-22 probably weighs somewhere between 2600-2800 lbs with the single motor.
The 222 lbs of chain, 15 lbs or so of anchor, and another 20 pounds of windlass add up to 257 lbs, so you've got about 10% of the weight of the boat right there in the nose.
In a more traditional chain-nylon set-up, the rode would weigh 25 lbs, the entire system would total 60 lbs, and be lighter by 200 lbs!
So it's very understandable why you've got such a great wave-buster there in Chanty, and why flipping the trim tabs up and down doesn't have much of an effect on the ride.
If you want to experience the difference yourself, either remove the chain for a ride, or spill it out over the bow and then manually carry the tail back to the cockpit and pull it all in, centering the weight there, and then check out the ride difference. If you do, be sure to let us know how it checks out.
Nice talking with you! Joe. _________________ Sea Wolf, C-Brat #31

Larry- Good point about a person in the bow!
My Great Dane, Shadow, thinks the v-berth is her Floating Dog House. Whenever I put the throttle down hard in in chop, she immediately seeks refuge in the nose, helping trim the boat. She weighs about 175 lbs, so our experiences are pretty similar. In fairer weather, she likes to set up there at slower speeds with her head sticking out of the forward hatch! Joe. |

Mine came with the mounts to drop scotty pole holders in, plus your down riggers usually have pole holders available, unless you are talking about rod racks, I put verticle ones to the right of the door, I've seen the "rocket launcher" style added as well.... _________________ You only win if the toys are used up and worn out. |

Most of the 4 strokes are good, if you are paying extra for "acceleration" etc, I would re-think the expense based on the c-dory hull design etc. If you could buy less maintenence, or longer trouble free life, yes, but a little more acceleration is probably not going to make your C-Dory a better boat, unless you are in a bass tournement with it...., then there is the question of twin 45's or a 90... the boat is so easy to handle to begin with, but counter rotating props are pretty handy, so that is a close call, I think the issue of maintaining one motor and having a kicker to use on a dinghy or small boat would be an advantage......but a dinghy with a 45 would again be pretty impressive..ha ha |

I have a 16# bruce on the bow with 40' of chain and 150' of rode. I've used the bruce in various types of bottom. Last year, we rode out a night of 25-30 knot winds with no anchor slip (sandy bottom) _________________ Roger

We talked about the C-Salt....many conversations and several emails back and forth with Sawdust. It's set up exactly like we want ours.....but we've finally decided to take the one that's being built now and take advantage of the Honda 5.99% financing. We're also ordering a tandem axle trailer after reading the forum online here. The C-Brats site has been sooooo helpful in figuring out what to get.
So, we'll find out Saturday if they'll give me a compromise price on trading in my ol' '87 Duckworth -- and as it looks right now, we stand the chance of being boatless in the peak of the Buoy 10 run and our campground reservation in Astoria -- but I'd rather they take their time and make the boat right!
Wish us luck!
Caty n Steve....now to pick out a boat name...I said Orcasm...he said no...C-Roemer ... maybe .... Caty Mae and he grinned a huge grin...but I still like Shut up & Fish |
