I went to the dealer today to get all the stuff I need to do the 100hr maintenance. They did not have the repair manual for my 2004 Johnson 90.

I took the covers off and found the oil filter but could not find the drain for the oil. Does anyone know where to look for the drain plug? Or are these outboards like my sailboat motor where you have to pump the oil out the dipstick tube?

Thanks,
Steve

Steve, I think that the 2004 Johnson 90 and the Suzuki 90 are the same engine. If so, the drain plug is forward on the right side midway between the cavitation plate and the bottom of the motor cover. Robbi

Hi Steve,

I've got the manual, and have done the oil & filter change on my J-90. I can scan / fax pages if you want. The book is up in the barn, but from memory, you do need to pull one side cover to access the oil filter. And there is a drain plug - pretty easy to change the oil when the boat is out of the water. I also changed the lower unit oil.

btw - the tool kit that came with the engine has extra oil plug washers.

Let me know if you still need the info and I can fax pics

Thanks Guys for the info!

I did get the oil and lower unit changed today. When I was at the outboard shop I forgot to get the plugs - had to order them from the local parts place and will get them Monday.

Mac, Thanks for the offer but I think I am good for now. Where did you get the manual? I have not be able to find it online and the dealer does not have it yet. The other thing listed for the 100hr service is checking the tilt fluid level. Did you also do that? If so where do you check it?

The next thing I started was the wheel bearings on the King trailer. I didn't even think about the seals I would need. I have only taken off one wheel so far but had to almost destroy the seal to get it out. Any one know the number for the rear seal? This is the standard tandem King trailer that Les sells. I will be trying to find one at the local parts places tomorrow.

Thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve,

I got the manual from ...guess who?

Les of course!
Part number on the manual is 5005661 - covers 2004 SR 4 stroke 90,115, 140 Johnson models. I'd bet you could order it.

I didn't check the tilt level, but instructions say:
1 raise engine to full tilt
2 lower manual tilt lock lever
3 remove oil filler plug (picture shows the plug is in the center of the top half of the tilt chamber)
4 If oil can be seen at the filler plug level, unit is full
5 If oil is low, refill with recommended oil (Dexron III automatic transmission fluid or equiv)
6 reinstall oil filler plug

Let me know if you want to see the picture - I can scan it and send it to you (but I think it is pretty obvious)

I can't help on the trailer - all I've done is top up the bearing buddies with grease. Mostly, I don't use the trailer except a couple times a year to pull the boat and clean the bottom

Thanks Mac for the info.

I talked with King trailer today and got the number for the rear seal. This is for the KBT4000 tandem trailer but may fit others with the same axle/hubs. The seal I got at the parts place is wrong. The trailer seals have a double lip seal. When I tried to fill the hub through the grease zert the grease started coming out past the rear seal. I was able to get the correct one today and sill replace it.

Rear Seal
King # 90957
Generic from parts store 24823 or 171255TB

I used the 171255TB number and they had to cross reference it.
