SPrice.
thanks for the quick reply. Unfortunetly the 16 footer is apparently unlike the larger boats. There is no access along the side or even in the stern along the shelf. Its all one piece molded fiberglass. the only access is up in the cabin and it only large enough to run a few lines thru, not get a hand in and too far forward of the area I'm trying to reach. I like the hatch idea. Where do I buy a hatch? After seeing some of the other pics on this forum, and thinking I'd need to cut a hole, I already thought about accidentally cutting wires and hoses that run back thru that area. I think the dremel tool is another good idea. Can the hatches be had at West Marine?

I know that you can buy the hatches in various shapoes and sizes at cabelas and bass pro shops. They are very easy to install for anyone that is a little handy with tools. Th edremel tool actually has a router attachment and it is plunge capable. You could actually use it as a precision circle cutter with a jig. I would recommennd that you cut very slowly to avoid bogging down or burning up your dremel tool. |

Most marine shops including west marine etc., will have the round hatch.
There are small rectangular hatches that may work too but they are normally larger and may be too large for your space/needs.

Scott and retnavy;
Thanks guys for the prompt reply. I'm sure thats what I'll have to do. Hate to cut a hole in my new boat but if it gets the new downriggers mounted, it'll have to be done. Now all I need is the snow and ice to melt then the fish better watch out!

Turn this into a positive.
Rather than cut holes just for access, install tackle hatches. Did this on both my 19 Angler, as well as the 16 I had a while back. Provides quick and easy access to backing plates/electrical for your downrigger, as well as providing a great place to stor fishing gear. _________________

If Da Nag is talking about the hatches that are made for holding the plano plastic tackle boxes that is a fantastic idea! I may have to go and see what I can do in my Bay boat now |

Sounds like a great idea. I looked at the pic you have posted. Is that on the 16 footer? Mine has about a 4 inch pvc pipe that goes from the cabin all the way back past the shelf about 5-6 inches below the top of the gunwhale. I wouldn't have room for that large a hatch unless I not only cut a hole, but cut off the pipe as well. Does your 16 footer have that pipe? Where did you buy the tackle hatch. If I could make one fit, it would be great.

Boy, if you have to cut a hole, those sure look functional. _________________ "We can go over there...behind the 'little one'....."

That particular pic was from my 19 Angler, but I did the same setup on the 16.
On the 16, there was no pipe containing wires - they were simply bundled and strapped to the bottom of the gunwale, leaving plenty of room. Still, assuming the pipe is directly under the gunwale on yours - my guess is, there's room beneath it to install the tackle hatches.
One item worth mentioning - you will have to remove some flotation if going this route. The amount removed is minimal, didn't bother me in the least...but others may feel differently.
The tackle hatches are made by Tempress - here's a link to the manufacturers page, but they are available many places. The 1115's look like what I bought, but check the dimensions - I don't have the details in front of me. |
