Port side wiper motor crapped out. A quick search turned up a few options, but... sticker shock! Anyone bought one of these lately, and have a good source?
Oh, and while I'm thinking about it, the cable boot on our boat is disintegrating. I know I've seen laced versions of these (so I don't have to spend a day undoing and redoing cables), but I can't seem to find one on-line. Guess I could always split one, glue it, and put the seam on the bottom. Any other suggestions?
TIA,
Jim B. _________________ Jim & Joan

Hi Jim,
It's the AFI 1000. I know what you mean about cutting the motor shaft off to get the motor out - I had to do that when the starboard motor died. Dremmel worked fine for that. |

Jim,
Texas must have milder sunshine than San Diego. The cable boot on Journey On went out years ago.
I found these: TH Marine Cable boot which has worked well for at least 3 years. Mine came with some vinyl cement and a vinyl strip that I used to seal off the slot.
C-Dory installed a boot on each side of the transom, and the one through which nothing goes is still fine. No explanation.
About the wiper motor, an AFI is a waterproof motor. For a C-25 the motor is installed inside. Could you get a non-waterproof motor? I would hope that interior of a C-Dory qualifies as a protected location. Defender carries Ongaro motors and claims that they will fit the hole pattern of an AFI.
Good luck, Boris |

Hi Jim,(s),
For the cable boot, I found a split boot at West Marine. don't remember the price but I thought it was much better than re-running all the cables. I put the split at the bottom and used cable ties to keep it snug. Hope that helps.
Harvey

Jim-
Do you need to replace just the motor, or the entire wiper mechanism?
(I remember the thread you wrote about the first wiper replacement the last time around!) Is this the same one, or the opposite side?
I have a suspicion that the wiper motor itself may be the same as this one:
http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/details/QQGMCQQ1000_SeriesQQA1_CardoneQQWiper_MotorQQ19631965QQA140154.html
AFI stands for American Foreign Industries, and I assume they have their products made all over the world by the least expensive manufacturer.
Replacing the motor only might not require removing the whole wiper assembly
through the traditional surgical techniques (!)
You did lubricate and seal the unit up bulletproof after Episode One, right?

I looked at the wipers the only way to get motor off is to remove wiper arm but they do not come off easily as Jim said he had to cuss and cut with dremil to get arm off then motor comes out . I was wondering if we could use some other type of windshield wiper system ?Now I just clean wiondows and use rain x |

Thanks for the suggestions, folks. Last wiper episode was the starboard, this is the port. No movement, it just chatters and grinds, so I'm assuming the gears inside are toast. I will look into the alternatives, since the motor is inside the cabin.
West Marine has the AFI motor at $220. Doesn't matter whether it's the 80º sweep or the 110º, since that is a relative quick switch inside the motor. I did set the last one I mounted up at 110º, which wipes the entire window on our 25. The pentagraphic wiper blade still seems to be in good shape... assuming I can get it off. Yes, I did grease up the shaft after the last go-round; we'll see if that made any difference. I will have my Dremmel ready, just in case.
Good to know that the split boot is readily available - I didn't have any luck with that in a quick search.
As always, I appreciate the help and guidance here!
Best wishes,
Jim |

Hi Jim,
We considered heading to Florida, but have decided to stay around Texas for the next couple months. Same latitude as Naples, similar climate. We plan to do a lot more boat time in the next year, but heading the other direction.
The best price I could find on the internet for one wiper motor was around $159. That post from ferret30 sounds promising at $119.95, but it is the wrong wiper arm for our application (we use the pentagraphic arm). No mention of which shaft size (no mention of 37200 item # with Marinco). I'll see what I have for paperwork (if any) on the previous motor...
Just checked: the paperwork says the motor is item # 36181, the 1 1/2" shaft. Sounds like the 37xxx item #s are the 2 1/2" shaft.
Best wishes,
Jim |

Hey Jim, I couldn't find the 1 1/2" shaft readily a few years ago when I added a wiper to the center window. So I bought the 2 1/2" and added a wood block spacer on the inside (with a fair amount of contouring), painted it with epoxy paint, works great. Just an alternate idea... _________________ Steve & Carmen
