Gunk in Sliding Window Tracks

This past week, I gave the exterior of my '99 CD-22 a thorough cleaning. As I was rinising off the cabin with a hose spray, small pieces of dirt begin falling below the sliding windows...and continued to fall.

Finally, I realized that this "gunk" was coming from the sliding tracks for the windows. So I focused the spray directly on these tracks (behind the closed window).

I was amazed at how much gunk came out! Going from one window to the other side and back again, more and more gunk came out (presumably loosened by the water sitting in the track for a while).

A word to the wise!

Wayne, there is a silicon based spray made for bunks that does a real good job of keeping the windows sliding nicely. I forget the name, it's something like bunk roller or ???? I bought my can at WM. There is a thread on the topic if you do a search.

Yeah, gotta wash those window tracks. I use regular 'ol silicone spray. Dunno if it's better-same-worse than Liquid Rollers. Doesn't last all season though.

I use a product called Blaster silicone sl lube. works great.

There is a carpet type of "brush" in the "U" track which the window slides in. Both dirt--and salt accumulate in this. Each time the boat is taken out, this track should be washed out--especially to be sure that the salt does not dry in these channels.

Any good silicone spray will work to keep these channels slippery--you want a dry silicone spray--not a gel.

I was back near Wahweap in Lake Powell the other day and crossed for the night into ice cream canyon. The weather report called for winds to 25 knots. Being bow on the beach anyway I put a second anchor out to windward aft. When the breeze showed up, it was dark and in the flashlight glare looked to be raindrops. Nope it was sand being blown off the beach. Now I got gunk in my window tracks and blasted windows ! Slides are really gritty and taking some rinsing. Maybe tonight will help. I'm in Littlefield Az, it's pouring rain and 54F. Quite the change from Powell. Will spend a few days in Lake Meade and Mohave on a circle drive back into the Flagstaff area later in October.
