Just among recreational crabbers, "it's not uncommon to find violations on 50 to 80 percent of the boats we stop," said marine officer Erik Olson with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife

And here I get a little paranoid if the crab is just barely legal.

Yep, me too. If in doubt it goes back in the water. It's not worth the ticket.

Ditto. I've been boarded 3 times this yr; once while shrimping, twice crabbing. No issues, as I play by the rules.

Pretty sad!

The "Californication" of wildlife and fisheries is relentlessly moving northward.

Within a few generations, maybe less, the PNW will look like it does down here!

In California, there's damn little left of some fisheries, and so much pressure to take fish, that there is virtually no chance of recovery.

This is true of most ocean and anadramous fish, but not necessarily true of freshwater fisheries.

Our DFG gives in to the pressure to allow salmon fishing on a fishery a mere shadow of what it was a few decades ago!

Enforce the rules, heavily fine the small offenders, and shoot the gross offenders on the spot and feed 'em to the crabs for Violating Mother Nature!

Joe. Disgust Thumbs Down

I'm not sure we want to shoot the offenders Sea Wolf but a couple of broken legs might help.

There is a simple fix that would stop the poachers. Take away their right to ever fish again. EVER! Angry

Well, of course, we just can't shoot 'em, etc. but if they don't respect the laws at all in the first place, do you think they'll stay off the water and away from the fish, invertebrates, and game?

These heroes are the same type as those that shoot deer at night in their pickup headlights on remote mountain roads.

Sportsmen? Hardly!

You are correct and they will no doubt still pray on our wildlife. If everyone knew they would never be able to fish again I believe it would stop the biggest part of our game violations.

There are those who would continue violating our game laws. Lets make it profitable for the states that find the crime. Everything that was used to violate the law is taken away, ie: truck, boat, guns, fishing equipment, what ever.

In order to stop the crime it has got to hurt. Until that happens it will always be with us.

I stand corrected. I was aware of that but missed it. The issue of game violations and what we (man) have done in his greed to have the first, biggest and most hits a sore spot with me.

As I travel around the country fishing with so called sportsman I often have to remind them of the law and the proper way to handle their catch. Sea Wolf is correct and I understand his feelings about not just CA sportsman but PNW sportsman. I see it everywhere. The quote by Localboy "it's not uncommon to find violations on 50 to 80 percent of the boats we stop," really set me off. 50 to 80% Geeeeeshhhhhh. What are we leaving our kids and in my case grandkids? Sorry about the rant Sad . I will get off my band wagon.

I don't think its common that 50 to 80% of sportsmans are engaged in violating the rules. I know that the fish and game cops are great a picking out the offenders. Hell I am good at picking out the offenders. First on the list is the owners of beach homes. For some odd reason a lot of home owners on the beaches feel they can go over the daily limit if they are having party??? I have been invited to parties where the host brags about going out and getting 30 crab for "everyone" by himself??? I don't get invited back when I point out how many laws they broke.

The REEL NEWS has a poachers report every month. Its disturbing how many cases they have of serious over limits or out of season. This month it seems that some of the tuliups are way over limit and selling undersized crab. so much that the tribe council ( two or more violators are on the council) closed the season for a week to assess their remaining limits????? They have along history of this.

Two guys off of Ice berg this year got caught with 503 shrimp??? well over there 80 per limit. another guy got could crabbing before the season started with 30 crab and using mooring buoy floats ot mark his pots??? told the cops fisherman's was out of floats??

another young man is going to jail for 5 deer out of season and one shot at night from a truck window across his girlfriends chest and out her window??? she needs to find a better guy.

As bad as all this sounds its still a small % of the total sportsman's out there.

I don't know if it has changed, but the last time I tried to report a fishing violation in progress on a weekend, the automated message said, " Call back during normal business hours." Sad
