I have a 2004 Johnson 90. Same motor as the Suzuki. So far I have used the recommended Evinrude/Johnson synthetic motor oil. I am trying to decide if I should stick with that (expensive and farther to go to get) or go with something I can get local.

So what is your opinion? Do you use only the manufacturer brand or something else?

I don't recall anyone posting that they have had any problems because they did not use a recommended brand.

While I won't go as far as to say that oil is oil, I think any reputable brand of oil that meets the requires of the engine will be fine. I have used Chevron 5-30 or 10-30 for years in honda marine and nissan marine products for years. I have also used it in the cars and trucks around the house and never had a failure due to lubrication. Mr retired brother used to work in the industry says that the tests the petrolium institute runs shows all the oils are basically equal up to a point. And then some stand out somewhat ahead when the going gets really tough and the coefficient of friction rises to extreme levels. But, truth be told, we are not going to see those lab conditions in an engine that is run with 10 cents of brains. I'm sure others will chime in with their favorites.

Agree totally with previous CB, if the oil meets or exceeds the manufactures recommendations any brand will do; I never buy oil re-sold under the manufactures name. That goes for oil filter, spark plugs, engine and gear oil, grease, fuel filters, etc, etc. These produces are usually re-badged with the manufactures name and can be cross-referenced and purchased for considerable less.

I had the Suzuki 90 (06) I used WM brand of 4 stroke engine oil Casey (Naknek) used to use Mobil 1 synthetic for his Suzuki 90 I agree any oil that meets the mfg recomendations should do . If you want to stay with syn oil go with a name brand .

I use Yamilube for my (06) f-115 engine since it is still under warranty for another yr . After that maybe a syn blend WM brand ?

Do be sure that the oil is for marine use- marine four stroke oil has some extra additives to help prevent corrrosion while the engine is sitting.

Of course it makes a difference Harvey. West Marine doesn't have "greeters"! Mr. Green

As long as an engine is under warantee, I use the branded oil and filters. I keep receipts to document this. After the warantee, then I use one of the premium brands, and but still go with the brand's filters. Yes, they may be a couple of bucks more--but there is a difference in filters--and I would want to go with the best. Some studies have shown that some of the "popular" filters are not as good as higher cost filters.

Thanks for the reply's.

A few things I had not thought about. Now, as soon as tax season is over I can start working on the boat.
