Fellow C-Brats:
Camille & I are planning a trip to Lake Roosevelt in eastern Washington in September. We'll probably head over on Labor Day Sept 5 (against the traffic wave) and come home on the following Sunday Sept 11.
We'd love to caravan over and/or back and welcome any C-brats to join us at the lake. I'm thinking of putting in at the Northern end of the lake, probably near Kettle Falls, but we're open to other ideas as well.
We're interested in exploring the lake and doing some fishing, relaxing and enjoying some late summer sunshine.

I'm surprised you have not had any comments on this. I have never been in that area on the water, but have driven portions, and it seems like it would be a good time to be there on the water. Do you have any info links, or cruise/tour info from the area that you can put in here. I don't know if I can work out to meet your time frame, but I have had interest going to either Roosevelt or Chelan for a long time. Have you done either of them before?
Just curious and interested.
Harvey

Funny we were thinking the same thing. Stacy and I are interested as well but at this point don't know if the timing will work out for us. We have always been interested in cruising Lake Roosevelt. JD, keep us in mind- we will have a better idea if the timing works a bit later in the summer.

The Nat Park Service has a web site with some additional details and a map.

I spoke to someone recently who mentioned that the Lake could be "buggy". I hope that in September the nights will be cool enough that bugs won't be a problem.
I've spent a lot of time on L Chelan. It's very scenic, especially uplake, but often gets quite windy in the afternoons. And there aren't many places to duck out of the wind. Anchorages and docks are scarce.

Ah yah you betcha, 1/3 of the lake is over 1400 feet deep and the sides are like your house walls, straight up and down. Tough anchoring, but beautiful.
Sept on Roosevelt may not be cold enough nights to knock out the bugs, until late into the month.

I used to go to Roosevelt almost every weekend when I lived in Spokane to fish and it is a very special place. It has a number of places to park the boat on the beach or set the anchor. In my personal opinion, the best ones are from the Hunters area all the way down for several miles after Hawk Creek where you can set up camp just about anywhere that looks appealing. There are a couple of very nice coves just North of Hunters on the east side of the lake where it is shallow, protected, scenic, and quite peaceful. There are also a lot of places to stay along the North shore of the Hawk Creek Arm, but you will have company. If you don't feel like sleeping in the boat, or have too many folks on board, there are tons of soft sand beaches where one can just drag the boat up a ways and set up camp. As others have mentioned, see the Park Service maps as they show what is available quite well. And it is a big area so there will be lots to see. Fuel could become an issue if you are going going to the dam and back from Kettle Falls as it is pretty far. I think you could have enough gas though in a 22 or 25 cruiser to do it depending on your set-up. But there is no reason to push it as there is boat gas at 7 Bays Resort (just south of the Spokane Arm) and the Three Rivers Casino Marina on the Spokane Arm.
I don't know about the bugs, I have gone there many times and not been pestered, but last June while visiting my folks I stayed at the Hawk Creek Campground, the bugs were annoying and forced me into the motorhome. Other times there are none at all. I don't remember ever being bombarded with bugs that bite in August or September at all.
If you have any more questions, just ask. |

We went to Lake Roosevelt in the original CD22 Daydream in August 2004 with Bill and El and Chris, and it is just a wonderful place. We launched at Gifford, where a high school classmate of mine lives directly across the road from the boat launch, so we were able to store our trailers and tow vehicles on his property.
We ran up the lake, with a detour up the Kettle River. Patty and I have talked about going back, however, during this time frame we will be going back to Lake Powell once again. Here are a few pix from that trip. The swimming pic in Nez Perce Creek is a bit deceptive, the water was NOT warm! The last pic is one Bill or El took through the fog in the early morning, and is still one of my all-time favorites! Definitely a worthwhile destination, all public land or reservation, lots of places to anchor. We would go back in a heartbeat!

We were hamered with 2' of snow yesterday, looking at those photos has restored my faith that spring will be just around the corner and we can get back on the water. Great pictures!
