I'm relatively new to the C-Dory, only had mine about 2 months and am really pleased with it. There is one thing though that I haven't been able to figure out...... I also belong to that other group, and know what
"C-DOG" stands for, but what does "C-BRATS" stand for???

How about we go with:

Brave, Respectful, Atentive, Tolerant, & Spontaneous?

I agree as well. Great job Rodger! But I did appreciate the history lesson a few months ago. I'm not sure how important it was, but I do appreciate having a better understanding of "our" evolution. The result is, I have even more respect for those that give their time to operate such informative, helpful, and fun sites like the two "C" sites!

Here is a link to the "history lesson" for those interested! It started out as "Sucky Site Performance, but quickly turned into something else!

SET RANT ON:

Maybe it's my turn to get up on the wrong side of the bed, but as a person who started out knowing nothing about C-Dorys before I ordered one, both sites have given me a great deal of pleasure reading travel accounts and hints that make my C-Dory experience more pleasurable.

I'm #462 of 912 members on this site, arriving long after the split, yet it didn't take a business degree to figure out all the rancor was ancient history and that only a few individuals couldn't seem to let go of the experience. In fact, I would bet less than 1/2 of 1% of the soon to be 1,000 members here really give a damn any more, and I get the same ratio/impression with the Dogs.

Granted, MSN groups suck worse than Yahoo groups. The software is cranky, it's not edit friendly, and more often than not, MSN is either down or doing weird things. But the real reason I put up with the software there is that it's a lot more California and Southwest friendly and I want to hear what's going on in my back yard too. Like here, if the split isn't discussed, everyone is genuinely friendly and helpful to newcomers like me.

My hope is that some day both groups will amicably combine using the far more user friendly PhpBB software. Actually, I have the distinct feeling that it already has, for the most part. Very little goes on here that doesn't get ported over to MSN, and vice versa. Lurkers abound, but so does ego and pridefulness, unfortunately.

Bringing up the negative aspects behind the original split just seems counterproductive. Posters no longer post to a few close friends anymore. Though we still preach to the choir, that choir is huge and, I suspect, well over 1,000!

Like the slogan of a Big and Tall shop I used to frequent:

Life is too short to be small

SET RANT OFF:

Don

Sneaks Don - I agree, some of my best friends are C-Dogs! The 2005 SBS was SO fun, so great to meet Fishtales Roger and see Rana Verde Chris again, of course Bill and El are C-DOGs as well as C-BRATS. And more than a few of the NW Brats are Dogs too... And I hung out on the C-DOG site until it mysteriously disappeared one day...but Fran Sea asked. It is a fair question, why are there two sites? And what does BRATS mean? I am STILL not touching that one! But there is nothing wrong in my book with laying it out for those who ask...I prefer this site, mainly for the sheer level of participation, but hey, that is just my opinion. And Patty and I would LOVE to boat in Sandy Eggo with you and Chris - and one day we will, count on it, just like we are we are excited to head for the Eastern Shore...and we fully expect to get to Lake Powell, and to Alabama to boat with Freebyrd on Lake Martin...the C-Dory love affair has definitely gone national, and there is certainly room for Dogs and Brats alike!

Hi, All,

The link that Pat provided was only to message #2, in a series of 3 messages.

The other side of the story was presented in the third segment, and is presented here:

Posted: Tue Feb 08, 2005 4:47 am Post subject:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Very well stated, WPHrEEK,

And some very good advice, as well.

What is missing here is the fact that for the past two years, I have been requesting that the ridiculing of Dale be discontinued, in the interests of moving forward.

What I was hoping for, was, at least privately amongst the earliest C-Brats, something like "OK guys, we've gotten our digs in, but let's move on".

Two years later, no such choice has been made on Admin's part.

And understandably so. They were hurt. But so was Dale. They absolutely refused to comply with Dale's request for discipline and organization on HIS website, and argued that he had no right to control their actions on a so called "public" forum.

Dale built one heckuva great website, based primarily on three things: A tremendous love for C-Dorys, a really well thought out and forward-thinking format, and a strong discipline to maintain that format, for the benefit of all future users. (And when Greg, Mike, and Bill went off on their own, that format was copied almost precisely).

Each time that Dale requested that the original Brats comply with the basic rules of his (privately managed) website, they thumbed their noses at him, made jokes and originated the "poobed" word by capitalizing on Dale's lighthearted "Grand Poobah" designation.

But that (understandably) is not included in any of the accounts of this debacle.

Once the BRATS (and I emphasize that word, because they chose it very deliberately) spun off, they ultimately got banned, for various reasons, all of which stemmed from them thumbing their noses at Dale, and deciding that he didn't have the right to run his website the way he wanted.
(Hence, the Policy Statement on my current C-DOG site).

The Brats started their site up, and I joined it, only to see the beginnings of Greg, Bill, Tyboo, and others have their little jokes at Dale's expense. It bothered me, and I let Admin. know, to no avail.

I had a conversation with Dale, and told him of some of the
unpleasant comments that were being joked about on the Brat site. He was deeply hurt, stated that he was just plain tired of this crap, and ultimatelyh pulled the plug on the C-DOG site.

At first, I was comfortable with having the C-Brats as my place for all my C-Dory interests, but when they continued to ridicule Dale, I chose to go off on my own.

Many folks were hurt by Dale's actions. Dale was equally hurt by folks who (seemed) to have no respect for the conventions that he set up on, what was at that time, the most visited boating website on MSN.

There are two sides to this story, and I'm 50% on Dale's side, and 45% on Admin's side. I'm saving that last 5% for when Admin can move on, and quit the insidious slams against Dale.

Thanks for your comments.....They were very well thought out, and very well stated.

Ken

I got hammered pretty hard for re-surfacing the subject, and rightfully so, but I'm grateful that I was able to present "The rest of the story", and I very much appreciate the fact that Bill and Mike have allowed me to have my say.

Since my side of the story is now out, I'm not only willing, but anxious to move on.

Ken

Aw hell, I just blew off steam - certainly nothing personal, Pat/Patty. That's not my way, but it's been a week of dealing with egos around my place and that surge tripped a breaker. Had I let the post simmer on my 'puter before hitting SUBMIT like I usually do, it likely wouldn't have been here. Once sent though, deleting or editing it empty just isn't an option.

Maybe we could use a somewhat depersonalized historical narrative somewhere that we can link to now that the site is becoming so popular.

I think the Brats and the Dogs are two of the least acrimonious and most helpful forums on the web. Try any of the political forums and/or gun forums. Kevlar pants are needed there. The only Brat rule actually works here.

As for visiting, come on down! There are at least 4 C-Dorys I know of in San Diego, but only the Rana Verde and the Jenny B seem to post on the C-Dory sites. San Diego really isn't much of a cruising center. It's more fishing and tourist oriented. Especially now that the Navy gets antsie if a boat encroaches into their restricted zones. (Gee dad, why are they tracking us with that big machine gun?) But the Coronado Islands off Mexico are only 16 miles from the bay entrance and a launch from Oceanside can get you to Catalina fairly easily, though it's all uphill. Wouldn't it be nice to cruise from San Diego 85 miles south to Ensenada for a weekend, then cruise back? The paperwork and preparation is far and away more difficult than the cruise itself. Crying or Very sad

Welcome pier is out.

Don
