Changing oil filter on Suzuki 150

I need to change the oil filters on my Suzuki DF 150s. To get to the filter, I will have to remove the bottom part of the engine cowling. I can see 5 screws that seem to hold the two halves of the cowling together. I presume that I can just take out the screws and pull the cowling off.

Is it that simple, or am I missing something?

Hi Alok,
You need an 8mm socket with extender for the lower engine cowl. (The basic toolkit that comes with the engines has a tool that will work but if they are stuck a bit you will prefer the rachet/socket). Once those are all removed it will take a bit of effort to slide the lower cowl off - pull it evenly away from the engine.

I use a small diameter (i.e. for motorcycles) oil filter strap.

Before removing the oil filters, be prepared for a lot of oil to spill out. I pad all around the oil filter with paper towels or otherwise disposable rags and also lay plastic/tarp on the ground. It will still spill onto the ground.

If changing your oil you need a 5/16 allen wrench.

On my motor I can use a gallon food storage bag over the filter to catch the oil

As Brent, I use the plastic bag and oil absorb pads--but you still will get some spillage. Many filters will allow you to use a metal or plastic cap with a 3/8 " or 1/2" socket in the center, and you place that over the end of the filter to back it off. Not a lot of room for a strap wrench on the Suzuki 150.

Brent thanks for the link. I have been needing to change my water pump impeller for awhile, (It's got 600 hrs on it.) but didn't know what I was getting into. I watched the guy's youtube and figured I could do it. I got the parts today and did the job. It was a snap. The hardest part was getting things to line back up when remounting the foot. My old impeller was actually in good condition for that many hours. I'm good to go again.

Many outboards have two water pickups. The upper one must be taped over when running on muffs. Be sure your engine is peeing.

Yep, so true. I use duct tape for the taping. It works great. However, don't forget to remove the duct tape when the flushing is completed. I leave the roll of duct tape laying out so I don't forget to remove it from the upper intake.

Removing the upper starboard cowling on the Suzuki DF 150 makes removal of the oil filter easy. An 8 mm socket makes removal of the 5 screws easy enough, or a phillips head screwdriver will also work. The screws are retained in the cowling, so you don't have to worry about dropping them.

Once the cowling is removed, there is (thankfully) plenty of room for a metal strap filter wrench around the filter body. It comes right out.

I changed oil and filters on two DF 150's yesterday, and found that, by draining the crankcase oil first with the engine tilted a little above vertical and allowing the crankcase oil to drain completely, the oil in the oil filter drains as well, and there are only a few stray drops of oil to contend with, when removing the old oil filter.

Remember to put a light coating of engine oil on the o-ring on the new filter before installing it, and install a new gasket on the drain plug, when it is reinstalled.

Re-installing the cowling can be tricky, if the grommet around the control cables gets bent out of shape. Adjusting the engine tilt angle and the stearing angle to take stress off the rubber grommet helps.

Just found THIS on the Duluth Trading Site looks useful for filter changes and even engine changes. Have not tried it yet but may. If anyone beats me to it, let us all know how/if it works..
