I need some advice from Hams on how best to rig an antenna for SWL on my new 22 Cruiser.

I've tried a 10' CB whip that was mounted on a pick-up truck, with no success.

I need an effiecient antenna to feed my Drake R8B, while cruising the Inside Passage and SE Alaska, and a way to protect the radio from an accidental transmission from the marine VHF, and radar, when all three are on simultaneously.

I'll have Les's radar arch on the boat, but I'm not sure if that will allow me to have such a short, or very efficient di-pole.

I also need ideas on where/how to ground it, ie does it need to have an isolated ground?

Thanks,

Law

Its doubtful that you'll get front end overload problems from either the VHF or the Radar, though you might get noise interference from the radome motor. I use "hustler" antennas on my truck with success, and never had any interference or overload problem with the truck's VHF transceiver or CB except on 10 meters and even then, nothing is/was damaged. Just use the motor/battery ground and you should be OK. Especially for SWL'ing. I'd probably investigate an "Outback" type antenna for SWL'ing on a C-Dory.

Thanks Sneaks, but I Googled for "Outback" antennas, and couldn't find anything. Is this a brand name or a design?

Thanks Again,

Law

Actually it's called the "Outbacker" antenna and HRO carrys it here along with the Hustler series antennas and resonators. It's a little spendy compared to the Hustler but a lot more convenient to use.

For SWL'ing the "Joey" would do over the more expensive "Perth" model.
