What's a good, effective chemical product that will remove boat scum. I pulled my boat for the season today and there was lots of scum buildup. Usually i haul my boat home and clean and wax it every two weeks but this time i let it go almost a month. I tried my power sprayer, soak and water but these were ineffective. I think i need a product that has acid in it to chemically remove the scum. Thanks Tug |

Ok, seriously now. I don’t get much scum on the bottom of my boat but over the course of a weekend the cockpit gets pretty dirty with herring oil and other sticky gooey stuff. Oil eater Cleaner Degreaser takes care of it all. Just spray on and let set for a few minutes than pressure wash off. It this stuff don’t work I’m not sure what will. It’s biodegradable and good for the earth and all that, works tons better than Simple Green; it's in a class by itself.
I use it strait just like my Gin.
And if you have a Costco nearby they should have it.

Ordered some Bartendersfriend, looked it up and it seems like a good product. Some-one suggested Liquid Toilet Bowl Cleaner..same ingredients as BTF..i will try that tommorrow as i don't want the scum to sit on the hull too long and harden.Seems that i have some work to do..have to crawl under the boat to remove the scum from the hull and than wax it.Will post the results on how well this cleaner works. Charlie, I'm not certain that is the correct name. The container I have is called "Bar Keepers Friend". Then again, maybe they worked at the same bar and are related to each other... _________________ Dave S.

On a similar line to the toilet bowl cleaner, I use the generic equivalent of CLR (Calcium, Lime, Rust remover) that is available at Lowe's or Home Depot. I buy it in gallon bottles and spray it on with a pump up hand sprayer like those used for gardening. I spray it on and leave it for about 5 minutes, then rinse it off with water. It takes off the brown stain from tanin and light barnicles. It is acid based. I find it as affective as hull cleaner at a much lower cost. _________________ Jim |

I found BKF works great for grease stains, scum, and rub marks. Been using Spray Nine Bottom cleaner before winter wax, works great on getting out stubborn water marks, just sponge on and hose off before dry. _________________ Mark and Sue Cherewick

I have used ON & OFF. It really works. I always put it on with a paint roller. Then just spray off with the hose. It is nasty stuff, smells bad and will destroy trailers if you let it on the frame. I used plastic bags to cover the trailer.
Use gloves and don't breath the fumes.

Just finished cleaning/washing the boat.I used Lysol Toilet Bowl Cleaner..costs $ 2.59 and rubber gloves $3.50. Started at 11:00 am and just finished at 5:00 pm. Works great,i just applied some to a 6x8 inch ScotchBright Pad and rubbed it in good. Left it on until i finished the whole boat..even the bottom and than rinsed it off...hard work.Than i used one of those car wash gloves and washed the boat with soak and water. Turned out very good.I didn't need to order : Barkeeperfriend after-all but i am sure it will come in handy down the road.Tomorrow i will wax the boat in preparation for the winter.Tug |
