Ok I knew that fresh herring and anchovies work well but are hard to keep fresh on the boat unless you are only going for the day. so i have tried gels and liquid and paste etc...

So I have been messing with the new brads super baits that have a removable renewable sponge in the bait holder cavity. Only problem is that it sucks. the sponge they use only holds the scent for a minute before it bleeds out. so I have found better produce. I got some oil padsI cut these into small strips to fit in to the brads cut plugs then I place them in a water tight container and soak them in which ever scent I want to use. better yet I have three different container. very simple and the pads really hold the scent and soak up the scent i have fished one pad for three days and it still bleeds out scent. the other great thing is you can use the small pads, cut to size , on any lure. the pads really hold up well in the water. just place on a hook of a spoon, hoochie , or plug. I fished one for two days on a hoochie and it still holds up. this is a great way to scent up your lures.

Ok.that looks like a slick way to get the "stinkum" down to the fish. But how does it affect fish on the hook and in the boat????
I have used small medicine snap top bottles with cotton soaked in herring oil and tied to the leader for laying a scent trail when halibut fishing. It lasts all day.

I cut a small fillet off a fresh herring and put it in the Brad lure. Change it out every hour or so of trolling. Seems to work pretty good. I think I'll try your idea out this week-end on Kings. Now if I could figure out some way to keep scent on a holey-roller. (Lure that is)

what does a holley roller look like?? just try cuting a small piece and hang it on the hook.

I have not used it but once so far and that was a bust. no one around me was catching anything either.

I sometimes use herring to fish salmon in the Great Lakes. Use meat rigs with a plastic head and teaser flies behind an attractor. Use whole herring and fillets cut from whole herring.

We only get herring frozen of course. Once thawed it gets mushy if refrozen. So I get a pkg of frozen herring, open it at home, fillet or cut to fit or leave whole depending on size. I then put the herring and all herring oil into a large jar with 1/4 cup kosher salt and 1/4 cup borax. The jar goes in the refrigerator not the freezer. The jar can ride around in the cooler for days and then go back in the fridge for a couple of week until you can fish again. The herring get tougher not mushier. They stink bad.

Similar to how we fish halibut. We soak pads in herring oil and bait the hooks with a piece of soaked pad and squid. I buy food grade squid at the grocery store- cheaper and in better shape than bait squid.

I wonder if you could use WONDER WADS...I use them in my black powder pistol...they are dense wool disks...about 1/4" thick and 1/2" round...44 caliber..

nice thing about the pads is that they dont soak up water. You can place one in the bulge of a boat in a water oil mix and it will soak up just the oil, not the water. so they dont get water logged.
