Been looking for an emergence kicker, just something to get me back home. I will never use it for trolling or anything else, the motor will just sit there unless needed. My only concern with this motor is reliability and weight, and I haven’t been able to find that on-line. The guy said his father won it in a raffle back in the mid 80s, and it has only been used twice since. I figure if it starts and runs ok on a stand and looks as clean as in the pictures it might worth say $600 or so.

So is this a motor I should consider or avoid?

Just never mind, the dang thing wouldn’t start anyways. I really would like my old 55lb 9.9 Tohatsu back I sold with the Porta-bote, great little motor.

I would have suggested getting a new(er) 4-stroke kicker anyway. You can get a new Tohatsu at a decent price. I like the Suzuki 9.9 we have on our boat. Very dependable, low hours.

Just missed a used 9.8 Tohatsu 4 stroke for $1000, so not in a hurry. You see a lot of kickers come on the marked here that guys have had on their boats for years with extreme low hours, so not ready to spend $1800 for a new motor.

After 2 and a half seasons with Triple J I still don’t have a kicker. We troll just fine with the main so a kicker would just be an expensive 80lb insurance policy hanging off the stern. I actually bought this boat from an active Coast Guard Officer who had been stationed in Cordova, he said if you took care of your motor and understood the systems and how to work on them a kicker was just a waste of money.
I do all my own maintenance and repair and trust my ability to maintain the systems on my boat. If however my vessel was a few years older and had an inboard I would be more concerned with having a kicker, but with newer marine outboards you just don’t see catastrophic breakdowns unless the motor has been totally neglected maintenance wise.
I’m still looking for a good deal on a reliable kicker, and convinced that my next boat or repower on this one will be with twins.
